The Holy See seeks 50 million in compensation over a deflection of a yearly assignment of 238000 by Italy. The dispute centers on Vatican plans for use of a castle as a summer residence and the financial remedy claimed.
Rome reports a potential private road to the sea for the Holy See with land sovereignty around the Vatican. A two-mile area including Papal buildings and the Coptic College would be fenced and guarded by Italian police. Talks cover a possible Palo or Fiumicino port and a summer castle at Palo.
In Ravenna Ohio a gunmen killed Peter Gullo and his wife Mrs Leno Gallo in their home amid a bootlegging feud. Police hold a suspect named by Mrs Gallo in a dying statement as the other gunman. Sheriff Ferry checks a Wheeling trucking link as part of the investigation. Rinto, present at the scene, survived unharmed and later recalled the fear.
Louisvill e reports T W Gregg a 29 yearold Mayfield Ky schoolteacher was arrested for disorderly conduct after altering a Kentucky 1929 license plate. He swapped Progress for Grafters provoking criticism of the motto Ikentucky for Progress as detectives observed a small group enjoying the change.
Detectives Cameron Lutz and Schwab with a Dayton guide searched Hamilton Ohio for one of four suspects in the Henderson kidnapping. Benjamin Henderson, Camargo Bank cashier at Madeira, was forced from his car in front of Oakley School and driven to West Carrollton where the car was abandoned and his machine stolen. Henderson returned to work under guard as a dragnet spreads through Cincinnati and county police.
Bertha Lipps and Dr. Evelyn Frisbie were charged with second degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Helen Haskew 18 at the New Mexico Girls Welfare Home. The women resigned after a legislative probe into the institution. The girl died after receiving twilight sleep injections and a bread and water diet following a run from the home.
Paris reports a World News Service leak that Dowager Queen Marie plans a roundabout voyage to meet her son Prince Carol in Rome. She hopes to reconcile, test Carol's willingness to support her conditions, and discuss reclaiming the throne. Nicholas acted on his mother’s mission without regency approval.

In Chicago on January 19 a crowd of 400 to 500 men with banners We want bread and We want work gathered before the Federal Building. U S Marshal Henry C Laubenheimer summoned police and six alleged ring leaders were arrested. National Guard aviators were ordered to fly over Death Valley and the Mojave near Barstow in a search for Harry Palmer and eleven year old Richard Grant of Los Angeles. They were told to land and detain Palmer if sighted. last seen December 28 at Barstow.
Two 12 year old newsboys Butch Meier and William McCaffery were robbed by three gunmen at Fifth and Brighton in Newport. The youths lost 42 cents and $1.10 as the attackers fled in a car. Police began a search after returning the boys home.
Washington reports a clash among anti saloon leaders over a proposed 25 million dollar boost to enforcement. McBride initially supported then opposed Mellon on the increase, signaling a brewing split within the Anti Saloon League and Methodist Dry Board ahead of Senate action.
