Three German flying monsters attack towns on the coast and inland in England, killing scores in a sequence of bomb strikes.
In Yarmouth England January 19 air raid damage was greatest from a bomb that struck St Peter's Plain near St Peter's Church. The blast damaged a full row of houses, shattered windows and littered the street with roof slate and brick debris.
Reports from Calabria Zante and Cephalonia describe violent earthquakes with widespread damage. In Avezzano a seven-year-old boy sheltered by a fireplace is adopted by soldiers after all relatives died. A tax collector and wife survive a collapsing house but lack clothing. King Victor Emmanuel and Ambassador Page aid relief efforts.

Washington reports a hopeful note on European peace as J P Morgan conveyed to the White House that financial Europe believes the war could end before June 1. The President and Cabinet sense potential moves within two months, with ambassadors and financiers ready to relay any peace prospects.
