The Water Works Department outlined flood stages as relief headquarters opened at 20 East Third Street with Mayor Dempsey and officials directing efforts. Supplies including coffee, coal, blankets and mattresses are being distributed, and $10,000 was voted for immediate use by the City Relief Committee to aid evacuees and the homeless.
At Fowler Indiana on the Big Four line an eastbound passenger train collided with a freight train at 2 am. Sixteen killed or burned to death and ten injured as fire followed the crash. Vice President Schaff and his wife aided in rescue. several passengers burned in wreckage.
Special Dispatch reports Big Four accommodation train No 3 was destroyed by a powder car explosion near Sanford Indiana. Fifteen killed outright with the death toll rising to twenty or more and many injured. Names of dead and seriously hurt listed, including crew and passengers. Shock felt in Terre Haute as wreckage is searched.
