Riot at Tennessee saloon ends in pistol fire injuring soldiers
In Chattanooga on January 19 a dispute over change at a negro saloon between barkeepers and waiters and several Eighth United States Volunteer Infantry soldiers sparked a riot. A soldier fired at a waiter, and the barkeeper and others opened fire, wounding Sergeant J. L. Williams in the abdomen, Private John Reed in the thigh and chest, and Louis Brown the barkeeper who was shot twice in the lungs and will die. Williams’ wound is fatal.
