New York bulletin reports Governor Asa A. Bushnell of Ohio has not decided on appointing Hanna to fill John Sherman’s unexpired term. He denies Halstead’s interview quotes and says he will await Sherman’s resignation, noting no plan to call an extra session to elect a successor.
General Buckner of Kentucky and Ohio Governor Bushnell met at the Fifth Avenue Hotel. Buckner told Bushnell that Kentucky helped save Republicans in the election and warned of trouble if the money question remains unsettled. In Greenwich Connecticut Antonio Angelo placed frozen dynamite near a stove to thaw it. His ten year old son, playing with one piece, set it on the stove causing an explosion. The blast wrecked the house and fatally injured Angelo his wife and Giuseppe Ninoll, who were inside.
An elderly man in Washington identified as Lewis Croker died today claiming to be Richard Croker’s brother. He worked as a finisher at A A Tallant upholstery and lived in a sparsely furnished room above the shop, cooking meals and sleeping on an old lounge. A telegram was sent to Mr Croker.
In Muncie Indiana Mary Moore survived a fire two weeks earlier after smoking a pipe in bed and burning her clothes. The burn scab healed with new skin and she reports her hair turning jet black and says she is regaining youth.
West Union Ohio January 19 1910 twelve year old William Menocks of Manchester England was sentenced to the Boys Industrial Home at Lancaster following pickpocketing charges.
Ex Congressman William E Mason won the Republican joint caucus nomination for U S Senator in Illinois as Cook County shifted its support away from Lorimer. The event marked a machine defeat and a McKinley aligned victory with Mason’s long political career outlined, including two Illinois House terms and a Senate stint.
The Woolson Spice Company filed an answer to the Arbuckles petition for a receiver. It argues the Arbuckles bought stock to sustain a lawsuit and embarrass the business, claims mills are profitable daily, and says owners will bond profits for 1897 and will buy stock from plaintiffs if desired.
Fire at the Dixie Lumber Company's planing mill in Magazine Point, Mobile, destroyed the mill and a powder magazine with 200 kegs of powder and six cases of dynamite. One man fatally injured is possible, windows shattered seven miles away, and much of the Louisville and Nashville line damaged delaying passenger service. Loss is estimated at 50 000 dollars.
In Delaware on January 19 a group of tramps tried to wreck the Columbus, Hocking Valley and Toledo passenger train. The engineer reversed the engine after two cars had passed obstacles. Passengers were shaken but not injured.
J E Richards a clothing merchant at Kent Ohio killed himself by slashing his neck and abdomen in a self inflicted act today He had come from Syracuse Mem about four years ago and his mind had been affected for some time past
Very Rev Thomas J Conaty was installed as rector of the Catholic University of America in a ceremony at McMahon Hall. Cardinal Gibbons presided with Papal Delegate Monsignor Martinelli and several archbishops and bishops in attendance. Conaty read the Pope's brief appointing him and delivered his inaugural address.
Depositions for the $200,000 damage suit against State Food Department officials will be taken in Cincinnati Friday. Witnesses include Dr J C Cullbertson editor of the Lancet Clinic Judge Amos Dye Prof T P Fennel and Gus G Luebbing. Attorneys Case Richards Ryant and Well represent the defendants and the Predigested Food Company of New York.
The ninth birthday anniversary of General Robert E. Lee, famed Confederate leader, was fittingly celebrated in Richmond Virginia with memorial remarks and local observances as the nation remembers his Civil War legacy.
In Indianapolis on January 19 Hon Charles W Fairbanks won a Senate seat to succeed Voorhees as both houses agreed he held a majority in each. The final tallies stood 85 Voorhees 7 Templeton and 67. Little business followed as the legislature debated an initiative referendum constitutional amendment and a four year life continuation bill for the plate court starting July 1 1897.
In Piedmont West Virginia on January 19 friends found J T Wilde, longtime photo gallery operator, dead in his rocker with spectacles on and a Sunday paper on his knees. He had complained of heart disease and recently shipped belongings to Baltimore, destroying cherished pictures and negatives.
The Supreme Court affirms the lower court decision in the case of Arthur Duestrow of St. Louis a millionaire convicted of murdering his wife and child. The decree sets February 16 as the execution date following the January 19 ruling.
Ruth Heges longtime private secretary and confidant of William H English was found dead in Indianapolis on January 19. The 40 year old widow reportedly aided English in various business deals and was said to have received property and up to $20,000 in English’s will or settlement.

Havana January 19. Weyler leaves the palace with his son and staff to concentrate Spanish forces on Havana outskirts and push east to drive insurgents from the province. Reports from Puerto Principe mention imprisonments of Gabriela Varona and Eva Adam as conspirators. Insurgents attacked Place 1 on January 11. two hours of fighting ended with six killed, many wounded, and sixteen suspects sent to Remedios.
Federal authorities reinforce the courthouse to stop a prison break in the Neace and Farler murder case. Six deputy marshals disarm all entrants as eyewitnesses recount Neace firing at Deputy U S Marshal Bird before Bird drew his pistol.
Seven watchmen of the Tolleston Club Chicago and fourteen farmer boys clashed at Tolleston Ind at 10 this morning. Shots struck six men with multiple fatalities expected among the armed party. Sheriff Farley jailed several suspects as the clash left Costick Pratt and others wounded and under medical observation.
Alfred Ashbrook, a Melbourne sheep magnate who died in 1896, left one third of his $2,500,000 estate to his estranged daughter Edith. Detectives search Chicago area for Edith, believed to be there, while two other daughters are also heirs. Edith married against her father’s wishes. her husband died later.
In Princeton Indiana on January 19 little Harriet Mauck four year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Edgar Mauck was fatally burned after her dress caught fire while she reached toward the mantelpiece there was no one in the room at the time of the blaze.
Secretary Herbert agrees to the request of New Orleans citizens and orders a modern warship to the Crescent City for Mardi Gras on March 2. The plan aims to showcase naval presence during the festivities and support local celebrations.
In Canton January 19, Edward Lauterbach visited Major McKinley saying New York’s cabinet spot remains unsettled. Names discussed included Platt and Fassett with others considered for seaport navy or London post. Senator Spooner and Yerkes also visited, while Fleming of Ohio and Porter were mentioned in talks.

D C Cleland of Washington reports his wife eloped with Frank Blodgett, his wife’s supposed paramour. The pair were found registered at the Hotel Shaefer, Blodgett in Wellston on business. The woman left for Marietta before a warrant could be served. Blodgett is noted as a contractor who built Camden's railroad system. Cleland to arrive tonight.

Six masked gunmen rode to the residence of R. Robinson and his son in this county last night. They tortured the pair to learn the location of hidden cash, found little, and fled after missing thousands believed to be inside the house.
