The Eighty first General Assembly begins work with eighteen bills in the Senate hopper. Key measures include Garver's tax assessment overhaul repealing the Warnes law and Moore's civil service reform replacing noncompetitive exams with a bipartisan board and classified openings. Joint inquiries probe state expense extravagance.
Mrs Philander C Knox Jr leaves Charleston marriage again, now in New York with a companion. This is her second departure from Knox and she says the marriage is over and she will not return. Previously they reconciled after four and ten months apart.
The House passed the Senate bill to establish Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado containing 231,000 acres, mostly forest reserves. Minor amendments were adopted with little opposition. A provision directing park funds to stay in the park was removed. Republican Leader Mann predicted Americans will seek the Rocky Mountains as Europe’s scenery.
Samuel Untermyer and Roger W. Babson testified at the Federal Industrial Relations Commission inquiry into philanthropic foundations. Untermyer urged federal charters and limits on foundation size plus federal trustees and income restrictions, while Babson treated labor as a commodity and proposed profit sharing. They condemned absentee control in industry and called for federal labor exchanges and social insurance programs.
Washington reports General Francisco Villa commands the convention forces in Mexico City and will be replaced by Roque Gonzales Garcia as temporary executive. Gutierrez plans to join Obregon and the Carranza faction or form an independent faction with 5,000 troops from Mexico City. Letters from Vera Cruz allegedly show Gutierrez coordinating with Obregon and Aguilar to depose Villa.
Constantinople reports our Caucasian troops defended positions against Russia as a Russian cavalry unit was said to have fled after suffering losses west of Hoi 2. Petrograd claims a decisive Russian victory near Kara Urgan and Adrianople with Turkish forces withdrawing toward Erzerum.
Greenup Kentucky January 18 Special Dispatch to The Commercial Tribune reports R B Leedy Grayson Ky Superintendent of the Eastern Kentucky Railroad was knocked from a car during tunnel repairs near Greenup and seriously hurt He has previously lost three sons to violence and accident one shot by Grayson marshal one run down by a C&O train and another from ptomaine poisoning after eating fish
In Huntsville Alabama on January 18 Herman Deely a Black man said to have shot Arthur Craft a White man was lynched at Taylorsville near Huntsville late today.
Billy Sunday preached to about 5000 in the capital addressing a White House audience about voting and Christ’s judgment. Speaker Champ Clark introduced him and lauded the session while the President’s party, including Margaret Wilson, were noted attendees.
Ironton Ohio January report of a fatal revolver duel in Torchlight Kentucky between Grover Dee and Bazell Butler a mine foreman and employee. Butler died from a lung wound after a dispute over pay. his brother John was grazed by a bullet while trying to intervene. Grover Dee was arrested.
One hundred German women and children refugees from Tsing Tau, China, now held by Japan, arrived in San Francisco aboard the liner Korea. Baron Von Schack, German vice consul, arranged transport to New York so they could seek passage to Germany. The group reports 400 to 500 German women and children remain in Tsing Tau. Husbands and male relatives have been made prisoners of war.
Avezzano reports show deputies and Red Cross workers joining rescue efforts in shirtsleeves. Deputy Bissolati aided Rendinara rescue as church collapsed, while other officials hunted for grocery stores and provided aid. A deputy warned Maglioni di Marsi’s vice mayor about jail if camping refused.
Lord Bryce calls for delivery from a second armed peace as Britain faces war dread. In a public letter to Nicholas Murray Butler he questions military buildup in the United States and warns against British militarism while stressing resolve to resist German expansion.
A Princeton tiger toy was delivered to President Wilson for the Sayre baby born in the White House. Edgar Allen Poe led Maryland officials who joked about sending the boy to Princeton. The President and Sayre family welcomed visitors and rattles, baskets, and gifts for the newborn.
