Dust Explosion Kills Eighteen Miners in West Virginia Mine
Charleston W Va Jan 18 An explosion of dust in the Detroit Kanawha coal mine on Paint Creek east of Charleston killed about eighteen miners who were inside the mine at the time. Only one body G P Neal was recovered near the mouth as rescuers labored through the night. The mine was described as heavily dust laden and the explosion caused a cave in and gas obstruction. Chief Mine Inspector Paul dispatched to inspect the scene. The mine had recently changed owners to Paint Creek Collieries Company from a Detroit corporation for a million dollars.
