Interior Minister Sviatopolk Mirsky secures committee backing to consult Zemstvos and Doumas on Section 2 reforms. A circular to provincial governors urges rapid provincial work and broad conference input to reflect peasant needs and sustain Mirsky in office.
Rev. Robert B. Nelson frames labor trouble as covetousness at the Newport banquet of Cincinnati area Employers' Association. Speeches defend lawful strikes, call for law enforcement, and urge broad employer participation to curb violence and protect industrial growth.
The House votes 165 to 160 to impeach Judge Swayne. The result follows a heated session and marks a historic moment in the judiciary case.
The House approved twelve impeachment articles against Judge Charles Swayne of the Northern District of Florida. The Speaker was authorized to appoint seven members to present the case to the Senate and conduct proceedings. Debates featured narrow votes on expenses charges and separate votes on car use and residence allegations.
A $500000 memorial fund for Rabbi Isaac M Wise founder of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati is nearing completion with $450000 collected. The fund will endow the college. Rabbi Joseph Stolz presented an oil portrait of Benjamin Bettmann, Cincinnati, President of the college board, on behalf of alumni.
New York January 18 Sir Charles Wyndham the English actor was badly injured when a trolley car struck him on the way to the Lyceum Theater. His right shoulder was dislocated and he could not perform in The Case of Rebellious Susan that evening. The motorman barely avoided running him down.
Mrs Alice Webb Duke may appear in Judge Gaynor's Brooklyn court as her husband Brodie L. Duke is brought from a sanitarium for sanity proceedings started by his private secretary. An adjournment to January 26 delays the sanity hearings.
Wichita hotels refused admittance to Booker T. Washington who lectured in the city tonight when his manager tried to book rooms for him at the leading hotels. He was informed colored people were not entertained there and had to stay with a friend.
In Jefferson City on January 18, the Republican caucus nominating Niedringhaus for U S Senator failed after 175 legislators convened. The first ballot showed Niedringhaus 7, Cockrell 83, Kerens 6, with several Republicans switching to Kerens. A second ballot ended Niedringhaus 85, Cockrell 83, Kerens 7, Pettijohn 1, leaving no election and prompting a postadjournment caucus. R C Kerens vowed to defeat Niedringhaus.
The Fall River cotton mill strike ended in a settlement at the State House in Boston. Operators and workers agreed to a wage reduction of 12 per cent with workers returning to duty immediately. Governor Douglas to arbitrate raw material margins. The strike had paralysed about 25 000 workers, with substantial financial losses to mills and manufacturers.
Richard Edmund Grieve chief bookkeeper for the Wabash Railroad in Cincinnati disappeared last September. He was charged with embezzling 2690 dollars. A reward was offered and tonight he was brought from Cincinnati and jailed in Pittsburg.
Bedford Ind Jan 18 Frank Evans and William Elmer Browning were arrested on warrants from attorney John H Underwood charging them with the murder of Miss Sarah C Shafer on January 21. Mrs Cook, Browning's divorced wife, told a story that tied the pair to the killing with details of an alleged plan and the use of a slungshot and rock.
Rev. Frank W. Bope arrived in Zanesville and announced he will remain until the legal fight with Walter A. Gibbs is resolved. He had taken rest near Lancaster and declined to discuss trial details, saying he is ready for the Friday hearing and has been away from phones and letters.
Washington January 18 leaders in both houses show strong belief that railroad rate legislation will be enacted this session. The Hepburn measure forms the base, has been reviewed by the President and cabinet officials, and is expected to pass the House before February 1. A National Board of Trade committee report opposes unjust discrimination while praising the Interstate Commerce Commission as an investigative and prosecuting body.
Philadelphia January 18. After protracted talks General Manager Atterbury and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen board failed to reach an accord. Board plans further action tomorrow as the union reports 8,356 in favor of a strike out of 8,976 votes. The dispute centers on compulsory firing by brakemen feeding locomotives on grades.
State Rep W Z Roll of Warren County announced at the Capitol that Warren County will back Harding for governor and will send a Harding delegation to the State convention. Roll indicated Harding is likely to run TM and would win a large share of Sixth District votes. Senator Foraker traveled to New York while Sen Dick returned from Ohio with no new political comment.
