Plymouth January 17 A fleet of torpedo boats swept Whitesand Bay with cables but failed to find the sunken British submarine A-7. Darkness halted the search and it will resume at daylight. The A 7 and A 9 had been ordered to attack a destroyer with torpedoes. A 9 fired but A 7 did not. The A 7 likely lies at a depth after the buoy was driven out to sea. Commander Bowers Symington and Lieutenant Gilbert Molesworth Welman connected to Lady Molesworth family noted.
The schooner Oriole reports rescuing a disabled fire masted schooner off the Maine coast. A steamer arrived at daybreak and towed away the crew before setting the derelict on fire. Captain Lewis Wharton could not identify the rescue steamer.
In San Francisco a 54 year old man believed to be A B Wood once on the Tennessee Supreme Court bench died by his own hand in a hotel tragedy alongside Blanche Wood who killed herself. Edward Roberts, a friend, said Wood used an assumed name and left Tennessee two years earlier amid political troubles.
Samuel Cohen, a Tombs prisoner once identified as head of a loft burglary gang, confesses police and private guards aided the thieves and shared loot. Samuel Herman, accused of stolen goods, arrested on $2,000 bail. Assistant DA Groehl says Cohen’s words could convict several officers and watchmen and will go to the grand jury. Cohen also blames absent conspirators for his arrest on November 22.
Ottawa Newfoundland January 17 William Cullen aged 87 former Minors Congressman and organizer of the Republican party died here today He was a noted political organizer in the region and helped shape local party activity across decades.
War Department recommends to Congress the building of a continuous inland waterway from Choctawhatchee Bay Florida to the Rio Grande Texas. Estimated total cost is 3,632,910 dollars.
Captain Hanson and eleven crewmen walked ashore at low tide from the schooner Polaris which ran aground near Pint Bolinas north of the Golden Gate. All aboard unharmed. vessel is a total loss.
The special grand jury indicted Terre Haute Mayor Donn M Roberts on bribery conspiracy to commit fraud and stuffing ballot boxes related to the 1912 campaign. Indictments allege payments to inspectors for fictitious registrations and names. bond set at 8000 dollars.
In Columbus Ohio on January 17 the District No 6 convention adopted Scale Committee recommendations. They call for coal weighed by mine run price, eight hour day with half Saturday, uniform wage scales, pay for all dead work, washhouses at mines, road paving, car delivery to faces, and overtime pay. Ten delegates depart for Indianapolis for the international convention.
The House Rules Committee declined to order investigations into the copper strike near Michigan and the coal district in Colorado. Democrats argued the matter falls to the Senate and that no federal or state failure is shown. A full committee meeting is planned Tuesday as Republicans press for reports on the resolutions.
Houghton Michigan January 17 Charles H Moyer president and six other officials and organizers of the Western Federation of Miners indicted here for conspiracy will be considered fugitives from justice by Houghton County prosecutors unless they return voluntarily to the state to stand trial I consider it my duty to have them proceed with surrender if possible.
