Chicago trade reports a weakened wheat market with May delivery down from early gains after mixed domestic and foreign signals. Corn and oats also fall on selling by locals, while provisions slide and hog prices dip, as receipts and futures activity show soft demand.
Minneapolis cash wheat at 84 3 4 cents with light receipts a firm tone. Corn and oats steady to firm with varied car quotes. Rye steady at 70 1 2 3 4 cents No 2 on track. Whisky prices at 1 29 per barrel. Grain movements show mixed inspections and supply data. Apples lemons oranges potatoes onions cabbage etc listed with unit prices. Sale quotations cover green meats lard and tallow products.
Across multiple markets on January 16, grain and flour prices show varied demand. Wheat futures weakened despite early bullish cues from Argentina while spot oats and corn posted mixed activity. rye and buckwheat remained steady to dull with modest price levels noted in several reports from New York and surrounding exchanges.
Reports from INNEAPOLIS show wheat bids for May at 86 percent and July at 87 percent, with No. 1 Northern at 83 cents and No. 2 at 82 cents. Boxed extra shorts quoted at 8.62, clear ribs 8.12, short clears 8.37, with bacon steady and further price receipts for flour and grains.

The market shows strong activity as Bodmann Globe Farmers and Planters warehouses present heavy offerings. New and old hogsheads range from $4.20 to $15.75 with multiple lots around $6 to $10 and scattered higher prices for top grades.
Special Dispatch from Louisville notes Pickett Warehouse sold 102 hhds including 12 dark and 90 Burley with prices from 3.00 to 10.50 for Burley and 4 to 650 for dark amid about 15 rejections. Kentucky Warehouse offered 91 hhds with 61 Burley and remaining new dark, prices 4.06 to 10.50 Burley and 3.65 to 7.50 dark, no rejections and market unchanged from yesterday. Total offerings today: Burley 781 bales, dark 140 bales across all warehouses.

Jan 16 New York four tunnel workers die from suffocation caisson disease and drowning after a compressed air pipe bursts in the East River Tunnel at Man o War Reef opposite Forty second street. The white foreman and assistant are severely affected while rescuing survivors. The drowned bodies lie at the shaft bottom twenty feet below river level.
In Pittsburg on Jan 16 depositors, mainly foreigners, began withdrawing funds from the Washington National Bank after the disappearance of cashier S. C. Armstrong.
