In Christ Church Cincinnati crowds overflow for the Inter-Parochial Mission opening led by Bishop Theodore I Reese. The service drew more than a thousand attendees with seating extended to the chapel and balcony as traffic police managed crowds and auto arrivals.
Miss Lucy Page Gaston of Chicago announced she had received a reply from President-elect Harding to a request that he refrain from smoking as an example to youth. Harding said the movement should be pursued in good faith and without hypocrisy.
Detective John Puthoff and Policeman Ben Albers found two men inside the Lyric Theater on Madison Avenue early this morning attempting to crack the safe. When Albers shone a flashlight the robbers fired twice, injuring no one. Police cordoned the area and searched for the manager without success at 3 AM.
The Weather Bureau forecasts a cold wave for the Eastern United States from Maine to Florida by tomorrow night. Temperatures are expected to dip to about 10 to 15 degrees above zero near New York City and 15 to 20 degrees near Baltimore and Washington, with colder readings inland and in New England, lasting two to three days.
President elect Harding declines to sign the protest against anti Jewish propaganda while expressing sympathy and urging avoidance of publicity. The letter notes he supports understanding and good will and protests the movement as un American. Prominent signers include Wilson Taft Colby Baker Bryan Lansing and college presidents and church leaders.
New York January 16 Jewish resistance to blue law enforcement was urged at the opening session of the ninth annual United Synagogue of America meeting led by President Dr Elias L Solomon. He said anti Semitism is rising and a blue law Sunday would worsen hardships for observant Jews.
Airplanes located the Baikal icebreaker after it broke from Alexandrovsk harbor during a December storm and became trapped in a large ice floe. Rescue preparations are underway for those aboard.
Tokyo dispatches report that President elect Harding considers Frank A. Vanderlip for U S ambassador to Japan. The Yorozu Choho an independent paper calls Vanderlip pro Japanese and says his appointment could ease tensions and promote friendship between the two nations.
Covington police and fire crews hunted a suspected arsonist after three fires swept the southwest section. Oil soaked waste started each blaze at a box car on L N railroad property at Eighteenth and Russell, a Kroger store on Hollman Street, and the Montgomery Coal Co office at Twentieth and Mal. Losses totaled about 195 dollars.
In Pamlico South Carolina on January 16 authorities reported five members of the Bigham family shot dead in their home. L. S. Bigham 40 and his wife Mrs. L. S. Bigham 60 are among the victims, with two adopted children also killed. A revolver was found in L. S. Bigham's hand as investigators pursue a motive in the deadly mystery. The elder Bigham had served in the state legislature and once sought Congress.
On Carr street near Eighth and Ninth, Willie Jackson fired on Irene Brown after a dispute on a city car. Willie and Tommy Jackson fled as Officer Harry Lubbe shot Willie, fatally wounding him. Irene Brown was knocked unconscious. Jackson was taken to General Hospital in critical condition. Tommy Jackson struck multiple victims during the altercation.
Geneva dispatch says former emperor Charles of Austria Hungary is recovering from influenza after a period of illness. The report notes he has been ill and is now improving.

Harlan Brate 20 and Miss Luella Starr 18 were ambushed by three masked robbers on Elliott avenue near Millcreek Bridge. Brate was killed by a head shot, Corey wounded, Starr uninjured, and the trio escaped as residents aided at the scene. Brate, a Lockland High School football star, died en route to the morgue.
