The armory hosted a charity ball for the Home for Incurables with varicolored costumes and uniforms creating a kaleidoscopic scene. Trustees reported plans for a substantial building addition as proceeds from last night will exceed the prior year’s 4000 dollars, underscoring camaraderie and generous social action.
The ballroom gleamed with First Napoleon style decor. Wreaths garlands and an N emblem appeared on boxes while gold fleur de lis lined the tapestry and white bunting draped the dome. Electric lights with fleur de lis shades lit each box and a central torch framed the display.
King Victor Emmanuel received Rear Admiral Charles 8 Sperry in a private Quirinal audience. The king spoke in English for over 30 minutes and praised the fleet voyage as a remarkable achievement. He thanked America for earthquake relief and lauded ambassador Griscom’s prompt aid while recalling Admiral Evans aboard the Kentucky.

The jury in the Thornton Jenkins Hains trial for the killing of William B. Annis had been deliberating nine hours by 2:25 AM without word on progress. Juror Walsh was injured in a streetcar crash and juror Patrick Ahearn was indisposed, delaying a night lockup in Flushing. Hains remained under guard in the sheriff’s office.
Harry Keener a York county farmer confessed to a crime tied to a July murder on his farm claiming a stranger victim. Miss Lorenza Tanser 18 testified others say she assisted in burial and cutting remains but denies helping. Police recovered a bloodstained skirt linked to Tanser and she remains in custody as an accessory.
H B Murray of the Mutual Protective Association reports the Hartpences of Haller Street have paid $911 to Dayton Mortgage Loan company over ten years for a $25 loan. They received only $300 in principal while $611 went to interest, and the company claims $97.80 still owed. They refuse to pay and the firm threatens suit to reveal the rate abuses.
In Pittsburg on January 14, J B F Rinehart wept in court as attorney W S Anderson urged the jury to see his act as serving the bank's interests during the Farmers and Drovers National Bank wreck case. George Worley and James L Smith were arrested by U S secret service on charges of attempting to tamper with the jury.
In Indianapolis on January 14, B F Shively of South Bend was chosen as Democratic U S Senate nominee by Indiana lawmakers. John W Kern, his strongest opponent, denounced secret ballots as enabling betrayals and corruption. Kern pledged to reveal the full story behind opposition as the public deserves to know the influences shaping the vote. Thomas Taggart said he did not participate in the contest, though Kern supporters allege some actions occurred with Taggart's knowledge.
Louis A. Heinsheimer of Kuhn Loeb & Co dies January 1. His will filed for probate January 14 sets aside one million dollars to be given to Jewish charitable institutions in New York City, consolidated into a single benevolent body.
Columbus January 14. Governor Harmon plans to address the upcoming legislature reconvening next Tuesday.
