Newport police judge Alfred G. Maybury shows discretion as Peter Peck, 86, asks to be jailed for fifty days to avoid a cold houseboat. Peck promises further trouble if kept free. the court offers fifty days to save city costs.
Odis Grace of Youngstown Ohio, 22, is in disgrace after attempting to shoot two Covington police officers. He drew a pistol from his sleeve during a cuff-shooting display, fired harmlessly as cops ducked, and fled before being caught by Patrolman Schneider. Charge: shooting with intent to kill.
A Port Louis message reports five men killed by sharks after their motorboat capsized in a squall off the Bay of Tamarino. The men were part of a six man shark fishing party.
An ambulance bound for St Vincent's Hospital with a patient and a Community Traction Company bus collided at an intersection in Toledo. The patient, en route for an emergency operation, rolled off the stretcher during the crash.
Chicago faces a budget deadlock as the City Council argues over 1930 spending. 25,000 city workers await pay, and H Wallace Caldwell, president of the Board of Education, says the school system is bankrupt and schools may close in a few weeks because tax anticipation warrants cannot be sold. City leaders remain in disputed talks, with legal opinions suggesting budget item amendments may be illegal.
Portland dealer J. J. Brands positively identified a Burke photograph as the man who tried to sell him a car in Portland. Ora Love had claimed to drive the same car for Burke but recanted, and the Cincinnati directory did not list Love. The car bore 1930 Ohio plates.
A gang blew open the First Methodist Church safe in Cleveland Colorado and stole between 300 and 400 dollars last night. Police investigate suspects and security lapses as the town reports the heist.
Two self styled gangsters held Thomas J. Corcoran and household staff at his Clifton avenue residence for an hour and a half. They looted a table safe and several grips containing clothing and a diamond ring valued at 5123 dollars. The safe was emptied and the pair left with their haul after threatening Mrs Hagemeyer and others.
State social investigator S C Griffin criticized the Cincinnati Workhouse as antiquated and ill adapted to modern methods. He noted four of six Ohio workhouses sit on farms with well lighted dormitories and no cell housing, recommending moving Cincinnati outside the city limits. Columbus has begun a similar farm-based relocation.
Four First National Bank directors were robbed of about 7000 dollars in under two minutes by three bandits inside Mason bank. Police Chief Calhoun suspects a woman outside assisted the robbers by meeting them in another car and helped their escape. The incident occurred in Hamilton, Ohio, on January 13.
President Hoover transmitted to Congress the Law Observance and Enforcement Commission recommendations arguing for new authority to enforce prohibition and other laws. He warned the Eighteenth Amendment and Volstead acts clog federal courts and relief must come from Congress. The Wickersham Commission report was sent as required. the House will act first, directing the matter to six committees.

Laval Osteen, 21, the other driver, suffered a fractured skull.
Charleston, January 13. Chief of Detectives John Egan of Chicago says a suspect held here in the Valentine Day slaying of seven Chicago gangsters does not fit the case. He will not return the man to Chicago on the basis of current interrogation results.
Eight men jailed in Jackson Kentucky after the Christmas Day lynching of Chester Fugate were ordered released on ten thousand dollar bail each by County Judge William Turner. The group, six accused of taking Fugate from jail plus jailed officers S L Combs and Lewis Combs, will face a special February term of circuit court for trials.

He offered the idea as an amendment to the Hawley Smoot measure as the Senate continued debate without a vote on the higher sugar levy.
Earl A. Waldron, 23, of Springfield, a car inspector for the Cincinnati and Lake Erie Railroad, was slightly burned on his hands today at the Columbus local station while cutting a fuse on an interurban car.
In Wilkes-Barre PA bandits dynamited a pay car at the Glen Alden Coal Co near Truesdale Colliery. Three men died instantly and two others fatally, with several injured. The pay-roll of 332000 largely survived, and an organized search followed the blast. No suspects were found. Patrols and investigators scoured the isolated section for clues.
Logan Raines 23 laborer of Hartwell died at General Hospital from a skull fracture after a car carrying him and his brother Herbert crashed into a tree and plunged an embankment on Cornell Street Sharonville. Herbert Raines also injured, condition listed serious. both men were treated by August Hoffmann. This marks the ninth automobile death in Hamilton County since January 1.
