Death and desolation sweep three heavily populated Italian provinces. Historic buildings and priceless art damaged in Rome and Naples. The U S ambassador endangered as chaos spreads through villages and cities.
In a fierce Senate debate on January 13 the Wilson administration faced sharp Republican attacks over Mexico policy and Democratic legislation while Democrats defended the presidency and predicted renomination. Senator Borah likened Wilson to corrupt machines and invoked Tom Taggart and Murphy era Tammany hall to denounce the speech as a virulent assault on the party.
Washington dispatches report General Villa commands all Gutierrez forces and has begun a campaign to force Carranza capitulation. Eight thousand reinforcements under General Angeles head toward Tampico, while 9,000 under General Castro bolster the Tampico area.
