The Senate found Judge Robert W. Archbald guilty on five of thirteen counts in a case over financial deals tied to Pennsylvania coal lands. He was stripped of his office and forever disqualified from holding public trust. Archbald sat with his wife and son as the verdict was read and condemned his influence peddling.
A steer escaped from a truck near East Sixty-seventh Street in New York, sparking a citywide pursuit. Police Dowling Schaefer and others chased the animal through Madison and Fifth avenues, finally subduing it and delivering the animal to the station where it was shot.
Senators convict Judge Archbald on the first charge for corruptly influencing Erie officials to sell him the Katydid dump in Scranton. The result is 68 to 6 with only five voting no and many absent as the chamber remains hushed. The second charge fails at 46 to 68 with two short of two thirds. In Monaca near Pittsburgh, 11 year old Leroy Higgins shot and killed his mother after being refused five cents for candy. He reloaded the shotgun and fired through a wall, later confessing with police suspicion earlier that another person might be involved.
