Pengwern Grounding Tragedy Off Cuxhaven Destroys Cargo
The British ship Pengwern grounded near Scharporn ten miles northwest of Cuxhaven with a cargo of saltpetre. Twenty four crewmen drowned, cargo a total loss. A live dog and clothes were thrown to the Vulkan tug. crew urged to jump but did not. The tug aided but a heavy sea drove Pengwern away and she disappeared.

In Gilbert Childer's saloon at 434 East Sixth Street a card game dispute led to a fatal shooting. Victor Carrel, 21, of 61 Accommodation Street, was shot below the heart by Edward Henry, 23, of 412 Lock Street, at about 9 PM. Henry fled, was chased, and arrested. Carrel died at City Hospital. Henry faces shooting to kill charges. other involved individuals were detained.
