Spartacans lose ground in Berlin as they are hedged off at several points and redirect attention to other cities. The report notes scattered setbacks and strategic refocusing by the group across multiple locations.
Reports from Berlin indicate the government has the upper hand as troops shift to support the government. Fighting resumes in Berlin with Spartacan forces holding part of The Tageblatt Building. Spartacan losses since the revolution's start run about 1,300.
At the Supreme Council in Paris the leaders Wilson Lansing Lloyd George Clemenceau Pichon Orlando Sonnino and Foch met for the first formal exchange of views. The crowd along the Seine watched as the high dignitaries arrived for the armistice talks and the conference opened at 3 o'clock.
Berlin reports say George Ledebour and Ernest Meyer, independent Socialists, were arrested by officers and soldiers amid ongoing unrest. Marie Augustine Lebaudy admitted shooting her husband Jacques Lebaudy known as the Emperor of the Sahara as he entered Phoenix Lodge in Westbury New York. Nassau County District Attorney Charles R Weeks said a grand jury would be asked to hear the case with Jacqueline Lebaudy 15 the first witness. Constable Charles O Connor questioned Mme Lebaudy for over an hour.
Polish leader Ignace Paderewski was slightly wounded by a hotel room shooter in War saw. An Exchange Telegraph dispatch cites Vienna reports of conspirators linked to the plot. Paderewski has been in Warsaw meeting Polish political figures to form a multi party government after earlier German efforts to block his path.
At South Byron six miles east of Batavia a rear end collision killed 21 and injured 3 as trains No 11 Southwestern Limited and No 17 Wolverine clashed. Identified dead include Franklin B. Leonard S D Harvey Ballard Jones and four other New York residents. Investigation notes conflict over block signaling.
Major General Thomas H. Barry, in command of the Central Department with headquarters in Chicago, is ordered to New York to assume command of the Eastern Department succeeding Major General J. Franklin Bell, who died recently. Leonard Wood is chosen for Chicago posting pending his decision on the appointment.
Tahiti faces near extinction from influenza with more than a seventh of its 12 000 residents dead. The United States Red Cross State Department and French Embassy weigh relief plans as officials await word on conditions from Tahiti via wireless messages. A six week voyage from San Francisco would be required for aid ships, with only two doctors on the island including American Consul Dr Thomas Layton.
Paris reports the Franco-American commission says American expeditionary forces officers and men are exempt from customs duties and register liquor wine and luxury taxes. Officers receive 243 francs monthly for four months, men 54 francs. Total exemptions rise to 972 francs for officers and 216 francs for enlisted men. Coupons cover the exemption, accepted by merchants in place of taxes. Major General Harbord heads the service of supply in acknowledging the measure.
Dr. Rupert Blue asks ministers to proclaim February 9 as Health Sunday and urge sermons on protecting soldiers and communities from social diseases. He cites wartime success in venereal disease control and urges continued, vigorous community action after demobilization to safeguard national vitality.
From Metz on January 11 a large crowd gathered before the Luxemburg palace urging abdication of Grand Duchess Marie and the proclamation of a republic. The chamber faced clerical opposition while a Public Safety Committee was formed amid ongoing republican agitation.
