Governor Willis backs an investigation into state departments to identify abolitions budget cuts and adjustments. Senate Republicans plan a joint committee or standing panel for the probe. Wickline drafts bills for primary nomination fees and voter registration changes.
The Ohio Senate announced chairmanships with 25 Republicans and 13 Democrats. Hamilton County's three senators secured posts including Pink chairing Municipal Affairs, Collins overseeing Manufacturers and Commerce and Military Affairs, and Bauer heading Fish and Game. The Fish and Game panel grows from five to nine members. assignments to be confirmed tomorrow.
In the Diamond Light mandamus suit against Union Gas and Electric, judges probed contracts showing $125 monthly for basement use by Weber and $60 monthly for the Krollman saloon, alleged as rebates to favor gas over Diamond Light. The Interborough Rapid Transit Company President Theodore P. Shonts along with officers and directors including August Belmont and Cornelius Vanderbilt are accused of culpable negligence in a coroner jury verdict on the December Sixth Avenue elevated line wreck that killed two men. The jury, in session in New York, deliberated fifteen minutes and reached a unanimous first ballot verdict.
Pleasant City Ohio voters approved prohibition by a 146 to 100 margin in a Beal law election. The drys won by 46 votes as the village of about 1000 residents held the quiet ballot on January 12.
The measure failed in the House by a 204 to 174 roll call with women and supporters opposing the suffrage effort, derailing the push for voting rights in the chamber.
The House voted 204 to 174 against submitting a federal constitutional amendment to enfranchise women. The Mondell proposal failed by thirty votes after a day of speeches and gallery reactions. Twenty five armed masked riders visited William Rose near La Fayette in Hopkinsville Kentucky warning him against delivering tobacco to Clarksville Tennessee buyers. They ordered him to tell partners not to sell to Clarksville buyers. Rose had 8000 pounds ready for shipment but unloaded the wagons after the raid and guns were fired in the air.
In Indianapolis on January 12, eighty one men admitted conspiracy to corrupt the November 3 1914 election and pleaded guilty to indictments. Eight others pleaded not guilty while twenty six others filed demurrers including Mayor Donny Roberts and several city and county officials. Demurrer arguments set for January 20.
On the eve of a vote to make Washington DC dry, telegrams from Ohio urged Senators Burton and Pomerene to oppose the liquor banishment. Messages poured in from Cincinnati and Dayton with a large batch from Cleveland.

The German cruiser Bremen arrived at Wilhelmshaven badly damaged by a mine according to a Petrograd dispatch. The Bremen, built ten years ago, is 341 feet long, 43 1/2 feet beam, 3 250 tons displacement, with 286 men. Armament includes ten 4.1 inch guns and ten one pounders and two submerged torpedo tubes.
A severe storm in Rome as crowds gather to honor Constantino Garibaldi, grandson of the famed soldier, killed while serving in the French army. Veterans in red shirts and political reps join a patriotic demonstration marking his burial.
Constantinople disputes Russian press claims of a Turkish defeat at Sari Kamysh. A Turkish Caucasus army telegram dated January 9 says front line troops hold strong positions beyond the frontier. Operations near Olti and Ardahan are slowed by snow and frost and a Russian attack on a Turkish transport killed several wounded and captured a Turkish brigade commander.
Rome dispatches report that Turkey agreed to Italy’s demands over the Hodeida affair. Britain’s Vice Consul Richardson will be released from the Italian Consulate and soldiers who breached the building will be punished. Turkey also pledged to salute the Italian flag when hoisted again.
