Standard Oil attorneys argue before the U S Supreme Court against dissolving Standard Oil of New Jersey under the Sherman act. John G Milburn presents facts and defends Rockefeller era strategy while the government’s case resumes tomorrow with Frank B Kellogg leading.
A gas explosion in Connellsville Penn destroyed a fire and ten cent store, killing five and injuring twelve. Clerks Mabel Wagner Christobel Smith Minnie Wallace and an unidentified pair perished, with numerous others hospitalized and a man missing after meters were removed prior to the blast. A frightened girl attacked rescuers, biting a man’s finger as flames raged and torches lit the ruins.
William B Poland resigning from the Ohio state tax commission cited lack of harmony within the panel. At a Cincinnati Real Estate Exchange meeting, members adopted resolutions urging Governor Harmon to factor Poland’s proposed appraisal methods into county property assessments. Poland later explained his reasons to exchange members after pressure from real estate leaders.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune from Bowling Green Ohio reports Mrs. Edward White 40 was attacked by epilepsy this afternoon and drowned in a ditch near Bays while on her way to call on a neighbor.
Carl Storey of Columbus Indiana a University of Illinois student and Esther Pohler of Guthrie Indiana were shot in a hotel room where they were alone. Storey died or dying while Pohler was unconscious with a abdomen wound. a revolver lay in the room and the couple had recently married.
An Ohio bill to curb usurious loan sharks moves toward publication in Columbus. Edward K Bruce plans a Cincinnati visit and a citizen committee will push passage to end prohibited loan practices and chattel mortgage abuse.
Amid wreckage from the collapsed Chamber of Commerce building, hopes fade as workers estimate recovery could take a month. Isaac Bishop says the trapped men may still be beneath debris, while George Krehbiel finds a shoe among the ruins pointing to a missing reporter Hayman. Police fear several women’s bodies may be found as debris is cleared.
Fire in the mechanical department of the old Brighton car barn at Harrison and Patterson destroyed railway ties tools and roadbed material totaling a loss of 50000. Patrolman Guethlein spotted smoke and alerted box 561. horses were saved but other equipment burned. Chief Jackson and Sgt Pottebaum led fire lines. flames from a defective flue fed a brick smokestack.
Princeton trustees meet in the library to accept an outright $500000 gift from William Cooper Procter of Cincinnati toward the graduate college. The donor waived a January 1 1911 condition that an equal sum be raised for undergraduate instruction, with $200000 subscribed so far. The graduate college will begin with about $4 million from Swann and Wyman bequests and the Cleveland memorial fund.
Speaker Vining announces a seven member bipartisan committee to investigate alleged Cincinnati election frauds that cost seven Democratic candidates seats. The panel will review four volumes of depositions and may travel to Cincinnati to hear witnesses.
