The Augusta dispatch notes the Republican National Committee will place William Hayward as acting chair until a successor is elected in four years. Taft accepts Atlanta visit duties including a Friday possum supper and a Saturday State University address after a reception by the Capital City Club. Mrs Taft travels to New Haven for a class reunion.
In Nashville the Tennessee Senate approved Senate Bill No. 1 prohibiting liquor sales within four miles of any schoolhouse by a 20 to 13 vote. After final passage, disorder erupted as floor leaders Holliday and Mansfield were chased by supporters. Senator Dancy Fort accused Rev. Dr. Folk of intimidation and threats linked to the Antisaloon League.
Constantinople January 12 The Turkish government accepts an Austria Hungary offer of 2 500 000 Turkish indemnity for annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The grand vizier Kiamil Pasha informed Marquis Pallavicini of the decision, removing any chance of war.

Uhric a 73 year old Cincinnati newsboy known along Fifth and Walnut Streets was nearly frozen to death. Patrolman Jeffries and another man carried him to a drugstore where Dr. Moss treated him. His wife also sells papers nearby and followed to ensure his care at their home on Twelfth and Main Street.

Bluefield West Virginia reports a second massive blast at Lick Branch coal mine killing more than 100. Rescue teams battled aftershocks and toxic fumes while families gathered at the mouth for news. A prior explosion two weeks earlier had killed roughly fifty miners. officials and rescue crews urged caution amid ongoing search efforts.

York Pa January 12 Harry Keener of North Codorus on suspicion of murder after 18 year old Irene Tauser alleged she witnessed Keener kill a man last July on his farm and bury the body in the yard. Authorities dug the yard to recover the grave site as district attorney Ammon investigates.
At a pantry church in Adair Michigan a coroner's jury found Rev John H Carmichael murdered Gideon Browning and cremated the body in the church stove The scene showed dark stains and a broken window as Carmichael fled after destroying Browning The audience included local men and several women and the burnt remains were presented as the principal exhibit
New York January 12 Magistrate Moss ruled that S and S Carvalho Bradford Merrill and Edward S Clark liable for criminal libel for publications in the New York American and sent them to the Tombs prison. They sought a writ of habeas corpus and were allowed to remain in a private room as their lawyers pursued the legal challenge.
Columbus Ohio January 12 Representative W C Schaefer of Cuyahoga County was overcome with grief when he saw a photograph of his son George among pictures of the Collinwood fire victims. The image triggered renewed horror as he recalled the tragedy that claimed over 200 young lives.
The British ambassador and Mrs Bryce hosted a ball in Washington in honor of Miss Ethel Roosevelt drawing hundreds of young society figures. The cotillion featured Miss Roosevelt and Mr Ovey, with Secretary William Philips and Mrs. Kennard also attending.
