Charles Taylor, a colored man, confesses to abducting and murdering thirteen year old Nellie Stepp on Christmas night. Gov. Bradley orders State Guard ready as authorities guard the jail to prevent mob violence. Search for the girl’s body continues at night.
Officers moved Harvey Allison to Bowling Green Kentucky after a mob threatened to lynch him over the Wil Draper murder near Adairville. The motive and details remain unclear while Allison, a youth, is kept in a secure cell amid tensions from the surrounding area.
New York reports George Gould received three cables from his sister Anna Countess de Castellane in Paris. Anna Gould, daughter of Jay Gould, wed Count Boniface de Castellane in New York on March 4, 189?. The union was valued at about 13 million dollars. Paris sources note a home purchase and ongoing palace construction details.
William Seibold a 17 year old Lancaster messenger boy used the name of Charles E Grubb to obtain cash from the First National Bank through numerous forgeries. He has spent about 4000 dollars since last October on gambling and fast living and is jailed with little money left.

Leander Young a 15 year old Morristown resident dies from accidental gunshot wounds suffered during a mock battle. Earlier the same gun wounded another boy and a year ago Mrs Iliam Wrenick was killed by the same weapon.
In Indianapolis on January 12 Charles W. Fairbanks won the Republican nomination at a joint senatorial caucus by 60 votes to 25. The session disrupted legislative business as the Senate adjourned for the day and the House followed later. Fairbanks supporters held a final caucus at 4 PM to confirm strength and planned to proceed with their effort.
The meeting heard Lt. R. E. Peary outline a ten year expedition plan to seize the North Pole using a ship and Eskimo families. He proposed a $150,000 fund to sustain exploration, a trust deposit, and a self reliant Arctic party with a surgeon and leader at Grevitana. Louisville January 12 Philip Co. Bown a retired merchant died this morning from carbolic acid taken at his home. He had cramps and rose to take paregoric but in the dark grabbed carbolic acid. His wife heard him cry My God I dont know what I have taken but its killing me.

A revival at a Little Rock area Baptist church ends in a deadly clash between Pastor Henry Walker and Deacon Austin Williams. Williams is slain by a razor after an argument over a plate offering. several others are wounded as police arrest Walker amid fears of lynching.
General Grosvenor reported in Cleveland that Senator Sherman will become Secretary of State and that Allison was offered the Treasury post and declined it. He said McKinley's tariff views are understood and discussed Cabinet plans with Hanna and McKinley.

Kokomo Indiana reports Councilman John W. Slider leapt from his two story block in a second suicide attempt this evening after a prior shotgun try four weeks earlier. He was to be tried tomorrow on a minor gas pipe theft charge from ex Councilman Bennett.
