A gubernatorial transition appointment names a new health director for Ohio. The choice aims to steer public health policy and agency leadership as the new administration takes office. The announced appointee is a seasoned public health official with prior state experience.
Dr. Charles A. Neal of Cincinnati was named State Director of Health by Gov. Myers Y. Cooper, completing the cabinet. Cooper may announce Tax Commissioner selection next, with utilities and industrial commissions still to fill. Neal will continue the prior health program and retain James Bauman as assistant director.
Peter Kudzinowski a Polish section hand from Pennsylvania was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of seven year old Joseph Storelli in New York. The jury rejected insanity defenses and ordered the death penalty by electric chair.
Louisiana Supreme Court grants Ada Bonner LeBouef and Dr. Thomas E. Dreher fifteen more days before their scheduled gallows execution for the murder of James J. LeBouef. The court denies a lunacy commission but allows appeals for rehearing, delaying the death sentence.
Cincinnati plans a general setback ordinance using police power to prepare for future street widenings along Reading road. City Solicitor John D. Ellis backed police power over eminent domain, citing costs and mixed court support. Alfred Bettman and Sears Roebuck endorsed the plan, with a Read ing road widening to eighty feet and a sixty foot roadway.
Walworth County Prosecuting Attorney Charles E. Williams, 60, killed himself in Elk Horn Wisconsin on January 11. A hearing on a $50,000 damages suit filed by Donald LaFave, 26, of Delevan, was set for the next day. LaFave had been connected to a Calvert murder case and later cleared. The suit arose from that incident involving a nude body found in a culvert.
Harry G. Rogg of Covington sues W. C. Thompson Arthur L. Doyle and Carl Besse for fifty thousand dollars in Kenton County Circuit Court claiming his home was improperly entered on January 5. Doyle says agents acted on tip about liquor and found nothing. Federal defense expected as case moves toward federal court.
President Coolidge says the Dawes reparations plan has proved successful and the key decision at the next conference is the final German payment amount. He urges careful calculation by a commission of experts to balance equity and justice including whether Germany can sustain annual payments of about two and a half billion marks and for how long.
Ohio motorists oppose creating a state department funded by motorist fees and backed by the Ohio Automobile Association in a resolving session. The group also backed the proposed Ohio Safety Council bill instituting a twenty five cent driver license fee and opposed gasoline tax or license tag tax increases. The measure targets Senator Walter G. Nickels bill to form a public safety department taking over general law enforcement and Prohibition duties.
A Pontevedra Parish archive document says Columbus was born in that town and describes his burial. It states Duke Vergna, a descendant, sold lands where the birth building stood, supporting the claim that Columbus was Spanish rather than Genoese.
Sheriff William M. Andersons County Boxing Commission won a round in Common Pleas Court as Judge Thomas H. Morrow overruled a temporary injunction sought by pugilists promoters and referees opposing the commission. Wilbur O. Heldman a Lorain furnace salesman was absolved by the Stark County Grand Jury of moral murder in his wife Margaret Heldman's death. She died from a self-inflicted bullet wound after confessing the slaying of Vernard E. Fearn, with the case halted for lack of evidence.
Andrew Jergens, 75, Cincinnati soapmaker and founder of the Jergens Company in 1881, died in Sarasota Florida. He built a world leading toilet soap business with brands like Woodbury’s and Jergens lotions, overseeing plants in Cincinnati Burbank and Perth with New York export. He served as company president though retired ten years ago. He left four children including Andrew Jr. and lived between Cincinnati Sarasota and Canada. Funeral plans await body arrival.
Postmortem on Hamilton Jett, 17, who died of double pneumonia at the State Industrial School for Boys in Lancaster, revealed twelve abrasions on his back and hips with six punctures. Doctors attributed liver enlargement and abscess to punishment at the school, noting no broken bones. Prosecutor Myers and welfare officials planned further investigation.

Camden Ark Jan 11 A road house operator Alex Hardin 25 was shot four times and wounded critically by F E Sullivan father of a girl who was the principal witness in a case against Hardin for furnishing liquor to school children. The shooting occurred behind an automobile agency where Sullivan surrendered and several persons witnessed the event.
Announcement from New York states that American Eagle Aircraft Corporation of Kansas City has virtually completed negotiations to absorb Velie Motors Corporation of Moline Illinois, solidifying a major motor company consolidation.
Sheriff Utz moved three Ohio men Kipplinger 23 Milton 24 Brewer 22 from Burlington to Covington Jail after an anonymous tip warned of danger. The Walton policeman William Johnson died from a shot in a confrontation on Main Street Walton. The trio admitted more crimes including a hold up and car theft leading to a manhunt across Boone and Grant counties.
Mrs Jennie Oldham 27 died beside a burning gas stove at 1525 Republic St Covington. She had hidden her identity after her husband John Oldham 28 was jailed for disorderly conduct, fearing neighbors' judgment. Police call the death accidental from gas fumes while she kept vigil.
The body of a 40 year old man was found on the highway between Aarian and Toledo north of Blissfield. He was well dressed and had bullet wounds in the head and back. An inquest was scheduled for later today.

Dr. Ransom H. Sartwell superintendent of the State Hospital for Mental Diseases was shot to death tonight in his Cranston homestead on the asylum grounds. A double barreled shotgun was used and guards at the state prison along with Cranston police were searching for the killer.
In Jamestown Tennessee on January 11 the Fentress County Board of Education dismissed charges against Prof Elmore Gentry accused of teaching evolution and assault in connection with a Christmas prank at Clark Range County High School He admitted allowing an Outline History in the school library but said he did not teach evolution The ruling avoided a second Scopes style confrontation and upheld the teacher's defense about the curriculum action
