Senate Finance approves lower tobacco levies as cigars taxed at three percent. Passenger automobile duty cut from five to three percent receives approval while inheritance angle remains undiscussed.
The Senate Finance Committee backed vital rate reducing provisions of the House revenue bill including income tax schedules while rejecting the Democratic plan for a total $500 million tax cut. Changes approved include caps on stock taxes, raised corporation tax, expanded admission tax exemptions, and a 2 percent tax on automobile trucks, with continued debate on inheritance tax and party-line divisions on further reductions.
In Baltimore on January 11 a four day vigil by an Airedale beside the body of William C. Mann a 25 year old contractor crushed under a tractor ended with Mann dead and the dog nearly starved. The tractor overturned on an incline while Mann hauled gravel and pinned him.
James L Dalton 60 a prominent Cincinnati and Poplar Bluff businessman died at Good Samaritan Hospital after an appendectomy operation. He led Dalton Adding Machine Co of Norwood and Wright Dalton Store Co of Poplar Bluff and lived at 311 Pike Street. Survived by widow Clara, sons Charles and Grover, daughters Mary and Phoebe. Funeral arrangements not yet announced.
St. Louis officials report Motlow and associates may face dismissal of the St. Louis indictment over the Jack Daniel whisky warehouse case. George Remus, Cincinnati bootlegger, testified against them and was discharged on bond while the underlying charge remains. Several other St. Louis and Cincinnati defendants were convicted in Indianapolis.
John Dunlevy was returned from Chicago to Manchester Iowa and pleaded guilty to kidnapping his niece Elsie Dunlevy. He received a 25 year prison sentence after the girl testified he held her prisoner for over a year and she escaped with her baby daughter by a ruse.
Melzar H. Mosman, 81, noted sculptor and designer, died in Chicopee Mass. His crowning achievement was the casting of the massive bronze doors of the west wing of the Capitol in Washington. His father cast the east doors. His studio produced the St. Gauden's statue of Lincoln.

The Board of Trustees confirmed Horton’s dismissal, noting he had been convicted of liquor violations. Propst cited little direct evidence of communist activity and said the two fraternities visited by inspectors were used to trap a bootlegger.
The House Agriculture Committee opens debate on a Haugen bill to create a division of cooperative marketing in the Agriculture Department. In Chicago police questioned Belgian baritone Desire De Frere and stage manager Giacomo Spadoni after the slaying of Henry Spingola, a Genna ally, outside a restaurant. Spingola was shot sixteen times while under police surveillance as detectives linked the case to the Dion O’Banion led gang conflict.
Richmond Va Jan 11 Three people were killed when a touring car carrying George H. Smith of Haverhill Massachusetts his wife and an elderly man believed to be I H Boles of Haverhill was hit by a Chesapeake and Ohio passenger train near Teaman a village about forty miles north of Richmond Clothing from the car suggested a child also died but searchers could not confirm tonight.
G. M. Wynkoop, American Buick representative, survived a massacre on a train near Guadalajara. He described nine dead soldiers and many murdered passengers including women and children. Bandits shouted they were revolutionists led by figures from Guadalajara region, with federal troops now in pursuit under President Calles.
Leopold Stokowski, conductor of the Philadelphia Symphony, married Evangeline Brewster Johnson in her Park Avenue apartment New York. Justice Richard P. Lydon performed the ceremony with guests including Mrs. Otto H. Kahn and Mrs. Bernard Baruch.
In Cleveland Ohio two youths were identified by their sister as Frank and John Maruchio ages 23 and 19, shot by Patrolman Daniel Candow who was promoted after the incident. Candow said his southpaw stance aided his quick response as one robber drew a revolver and struck him. He fired, wounding both suspects. one died instantly, the other an hour later.
In Bristol Virginia on January 11 the garter flasks with ornate decorations are popular locally. Dozens have sold, many given as Christmas gifts, as residents embrace the novelty drinking containers.
Conductor Mr. Stokowski led the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for five years. He began his baton duties in 1907 following Frank Van Der Stucken and resigned in 1912, with Ernest Kunwald succeeding him.
