Johnson calls for Walb to quit as state chairman amid Indiana party realignments. Watson says he will not run for Republican nomination, clearing the field for Coolidge. Emison named Indiana campaign manager, signaling unity behind Coolidge in the Indiana primary.
In Indianapolis on January 11 Clarence R. Martin, manager of Johnsons Indiana campaign, called on Clyde A. Walb to resign after reports in Washington said Walb nominated Ewing Emison of Vincennes as Indiana manager for Coolidge campaign. Martin said the State Committee should seek party nomination and not influence the primary.
Senator Hiram Johnson will launch his Michigan campaign with a Detroit meeting on Thursday night January 17. He will depart Washington Wednesday for Detroit and then return to Illinois for two Chicago appearances on January 18?. Indiana speech plans are being considered by Johnson managers.
A state party conference will meet January 24 at the Deschler Hotel in Columbus to review the political situation and discuss state welfare matters. Charles W. Montgomery, state chairman, issued the call to committeemen and party officials. Invitations to Washington were sent only to Senators Willis and Fess and Attorney General Daugherty. Senator Fess stated he believes the conference will aid the party and will attend if duties permit.
From Peking Jan 11 Associated Press reports say Mrs. Juliaa Kilen of Northfield Minnesota aged 50 with Chinese language skill posed as decoy to save her wounded colleague Mrs. Bernhard Hoff during a bandit raid on a mission at Tsaoyang Hupeh province. The bandits took Kilen instead of Hoff and fled toward Henan. Hoff and her husband Prof Hoff were shot when attempting to flee. Kilen’s remains are not reported. bandits are sought and may join an army if spared.
Paris reports Lt. Du Plessis de Grenadan, commander of the Dixmude, had repeatedly criticized the dirigibles faulty construction and the French technical service. The Mail asks why government allowed the airship to depart with his complaints on record and seeks full publicity of his letters and reports.
In Hamilton Ohio a mass meeting praised the patriotism of Lt Corliss Hooven Griffis and urged the German government to pardon him. Speakers including Major Barratt O Hara and Colonel John P Tansey commended the National Griffis Committee which has surpassed 2 000 000 signatures on its pardon petition. They predicted Griffis would be home within sixty days and thanked Dr James Whitney Hall and committee members.
Baltimore January 11 The grand jury recommended licensing beverage saloons legalizing the sale of light wines and beer and creating a segregated section for better control of social vice. They believe legalized light wine and beer would improve conditions and reduce intolerance among people.
Portland England January 11 Divers conducted multiple shallow water descents off Portland Bill trying to confirm the position of the British submarine L-24, which sank after colliding with the battleship Resolution. Heavy seas hinder search. no survivors expected. The Resolution shows a badly holed bow cabin, indicating a violent impact. Twenty five crew members married. among them Charles Matthews who warned of danger. His wife recalled his premonition and a foreboding call before the loss.
Miss Eleanor Vredenburg of New York City thrilled the Nice race crowd by piloting her seaplane over the track yesterday. She was accompanied by Captain Paul Tacelli, also of New York.
Washington Jan 11 A thorough reorganization of the central office of the Veterans Bureau effective January 15 divides activities into an operating division and a planning and control division Six assistant directors will run the two new groups with four supervising operating duties and two handling planning and control Transferred personnel include Dr L B Rogers to the New Haven Veterans Bureau Hospital and Dr Edw P Odendhal to a tuberculosis hospital at Tupper Lake NY George E Ijams named assistant director in charge of hospitalization and rehabilitation service The executive officer's office is ended and a shift of lawyers to the Claims Division and leases and contracts to the Supply Division is planned Delegation of routine duties to assistant directors will allow Director Hines to focus on policy matters.
New York reports Count Ludwig Salm von tinvogstraeien married Millicent Rogers at City Hall after a swift courtship begun at a dance. Colonel H. H. Rogers, her father, reportedly frowned on the match due to the Count being Austrian and divorced, though the couple plans to sail to Austria and the Count aims to compete in Olympic tennis events.
R. J. Marks of Honing Hotel Cincinnati 48 fought off three men who used a woman as bait to lure him into a car on Third Street near Columbia in Newport. Police arrived after the would be abductors fled. Marks suspects the attackers targeted his large diamond stickpin.
Blair P. Jones reports a knife robbery at Seventh and Mound streets. Two black men demanded money from Jones, with one wielding a knife. They took 30 cents and a cigarette, then fled. Police seek suspects described as negroes.
Herbert Roden a 25 year old electrician of 2617 Pecan street was charged in a warrant sworn by W E Luken chief operator of Western Union. Police say Roden was found at George street and Central avenue yesterday attempting to sell a typewriter identified as stolen from the Dixie Terminal telegraph office Thursday night and Roden reportedly admitted the theft.
The destroyer Codlam that grounded between Beaufort Bar and Cape Lookout Light has been floated and anchored in Cape Lookout Cove with no crew injuries. The leaking steamship Santurce was floated off Cape Lookout after grounding two days earlier and may be towed to Norfolk by a wrecking tug. The steamship Springfield went ashore on Cape Fear Bar and the cutter Modoc was dispatched from Southport to assist.
In Chicago on January 11 about fifty youths including Wendell Phillips High School students attacked teachers in a Negro district. Five police squads arrived after shots were fired but no injuries occurred. The disturbance began when pupils disrupted a classroom where about seventy girls, mostly Negro, were taking a dancing lesson. Teachers expelled the students who then attacked them on the sidewalk. an assistant principal was beaten and two teachers injured.
Police say an undistinguished sock led detectives to a bootleg den near Georgetown University. After six months of reports that red wine reached students, officers seized fifteen barrels and four bottles of evidence with a wine press. Spenali and John Buzzanca were charged with making possessing and selling illicit liquor.
Daniel Evers 59 of 219 Grant Street was killed when his car skidded and overturned to avoid a truck on the Dixie Highway a half mile south of Franklin Ohio yesterday afternoon. His wife son and daughter in law were injured. The truck did not stop. The party was en route to Dayton to visit a dying sister in law. The injured were taken to Franklin then home to Cincinnati for treatment. Evers funeral plans unknown. Survived by widow two sons Clarence and Will and four daughters. Next of kin listed as Mrs R Bowie Bellevue Kentucky. Funeral arrangements not complete.
Mrs Anglia Wesselmann 80 of 927 Laurel Street was struck while crossing Baymiller and Laurel yesterday morning by a Sixth Street street car. She suffered shock possible skull fracture and bruises and was taken to St Marys Hospital. Motorman Frank Cornelius and conductor Edward Luken were on duty. Cornelius said he sounded his gong but she did not hear it.
Cincinnati and Hamilton authorities searched yesterday for two women seriously injured in a Thursday night crash on the Springfield pike when a car bus traveling between Cincinnati and Hamilton collided with a motor truck. A passing motorist later offered to take them to General Hospital in Cincinnati.
On Eighth street between John and Mound streets a street car, a United States mail truck, and a milk wagon collided. The milk wagon owned by French Brothers Bauer Company and run by William Armstrong was stopped by the curb. The Warsaw street car led by Ben Robson with John Nester as conductor moved west as the mail truck tried to pass, resulting in damage but no serious injuries.
William Cook, 64, of 1261 Harrison avenue, was jolted from a wagon yesterday morning at Harrison and Western. He fell under the wheels, was badly hurt and taken to General Hospital with probable internal injuries. Cook is employed by the city.
Dayton residents sent between 200 and 300 votes to Rev. Miles H. Krumbine chairing the Bok Peace Referendum Committee. The Dayton hometown vote favors the Bok peace plan, with the count so far unanimous in support.
Charleston dispatch reports a disabled veteran testified that he lost about four thousand dollars in dealings with Beazell and Chatfield. In a separate plea for mercy, Jim Aiello, who slain his brother in law and two children, had his death sentence commuted to life hours before execution. Governor Morgan granted clemency as Aiello faced the gallows at Moundsville.
Eveline Bajour, 16, vanished from her Los Angeles home a week earlier. Patrolman Herbert H. Wheatley found her on his beat and brought her back to her parents, declining the $2,000 reward, saying he only did his duty as a patrolman.
Governor Donahey said the Ohio Public Utilities Commission will not grant the proposed long distance rate rise by Ohio Bell without a complete investigation. The plan would lift average charges by about three cents per message and about five cents on tolls up to seventy five cents, with protests already filed by two groups and more expected. The governor urged civic bodies and business groups to file protests to ensure a thorough audit before any increase becomes effective.
Sixty three convict miners at the Aldrich Mine near Montevallo Alabama mutinied this morning and entrenched themselves in the pit. They surrendered to guards after officials entered the mine this evening. No deaths or serious injuries were reported. An investigating crew will assess damage from dynamite used.
The new Greek Cabinet led by Eliphtherios Venizelos was sworn in at Athens tonight. All ministers are Liberals except M Russos, forming a predominantly liberal government.
The Atlanta Journal reports a credibility noted claim that William Simmons and Edward Clarke have been expelled from the Ku Klux Klan for opposing Dr. Hiram Wesley Evans leadership. Conflicting accounts say the banishment came from Evans supporters while friends of Simmons and Clarke claim imperial headquarters moved to Washington and deny the removal. Clarke vows a national klan congress on February 26 to expose alleged abuses and to rally support against Evans.
H C McCall imperial representative of the Ku Klux Klan in Washington confirmed reports that William J Simmons Imperial Emperor and Edward Young Clarke Imperial Giant were expelled from the order. He denied moving headquarters to Washington and said the action was taken in a two day old meeting led by Hiram W Evans.
P M Bacot, tubercular WWI veteran and Rockhill Sanitarium patient, testified he lost over 4000 when Beazell and Chatfield firm failed. He deposited securities in 1922 later used as collateral, with neither securities nor cash returned. State aims to show conspiracy and bad faith, while defense notes Bacot’s war disability and cross examination tactics. Additional witnesses and forged signature allegations emerged as the trial continued.
