Mrs Caroline Joselyn confesses to murdering her husband William Joselyn by arsenic over six days. She watched him die with clinical detachment and blamed a farm hand Isaac Swan for supplying the poison and inspiring the crime.
H Lee Barry won the Chamber presidency by 376 to 259 over Major J B Wallace with 639 ballots cast. four ballots were blank. Independent candidates held six seats vs four Regular. Officers include President H Lee Early and vice presidents L L Sadler and R W Wise. Directors include H H Hill Edward R Buhrman J M Sears B W Gale and John Hoffmann.
Anton Hermann, arraigned before Justice Printsville, cites poverty as his reason for not educating Katie 11. He asserts nineteen children and six of school age, working at a lumber yard. He is fined $10 with suspension on condition Katie attends school.
A Columbus messenger presented the official Ohio result to Judge A C Thompson in Cincinnati. Albert Thomas of Dayton acted as Elector for the Third District, with the document destined for the U S Senate in Washington. The age-old practice stores all twenty-five documents in iron vaults, never opened unless Washington loses or destroys the records.

A morning fire at 12 10 in a two story brick building 324 East Seventh street started in the cellar and spread to the first floor where large quantities of coal oil were found. The Jenkins family on the upper floor were overcome by smoke and rescued. Investigators suspect arson aimed to fuel the flames.
At St Peter Cathedral a Pontifical Mass will mark the investiture of the Most Rev Archbishop Moeller with the pallium. Cardinal Gibbons will deliver the sermon and the Right Rev Bishop McCloskey is expected to perform the investiture ceremony.
John T. Manning, 72, New York capitalist with an estimated 40 million dollars, visits Cincinnati and warns locals to invest and shed conservatism. He praises the city’s wealth potential, notes its 345000 population, and says even an old man can see opportunities.
Buyers H B Hollins & Co of New York and Eugene Zimmerman of Cincinnati acquire 112 900 acres of Clinchfield coal lands in Wise and Dickinson counties West Virginia for 3 300 000 including bonded debt. Rail lines Virginia and Southeastern and Virginia and Southwestern to gain future Chicago lakes access. Zimmerman dodges details while further acquisitions hinted in Eastern Kentucky and Western West Virginia.
Jan 11 at the Hotel Walton Mrs Cornelia Baxter Tevis formerly of Denver and daughter of Governor George W Baxter Tennessee wed Andrew Hartuppé McKee of Pittsburg. McKee’s former wife had been granted a divorce in Pittsburg on Monday.
Russian Admiral Doubassoff indicates an honorable peace with Japan is likely but only temporary. He urges rapid reconstruction of the fleet to gain sea supremacy, predicts a future confrontation with Japan and notes Moscow's growing pro-peace sentiment despite Imperial skepticism.
In St Petersburg a Christmas sermon before the imperial family linked gospel peace with world peace. The Emperor was prayed for, with hope that the war would end and the angelic message of peace reach all hearts. Rosters note Russia wants peace at home, while internal strife and peasant mortality are highlighted. An address from Podgorovk’s Agricultural Society pledges Orthodox unity in danger, which the Emperor endorsed.
In formal audiences at Berlin on January 11 and 12, Emperor William praised General Stoessel for Port Arthur defense and announced Russia's consent to his Pour le Merite. He then honored General Nogi, noting Japan’s approval for the same order. Telegraph exchanges between emperors followed.
