Ethel Rawson was killed and Sidney Ranson Charles Clark Thomas Turner and others were wounded as lantern brothers Grover and George Lantern faced murder charges. The first brawl began at a dance near Williamstown then violence spread to a second quarrel at four miles away.
The Rev. Canon William Sheafe Chase of Christ Church Brooklyn turned over an anonymous letter to police threatening his life over a newspaper article on Sunday law observance. Chase has campaigned to close moving picture shows on Sundays and was previously found guilty of contempt for commenting on the Sunday law case.
A Jan 9 explosion at a Collinsville nickelodeon caused many injuries. Paul Kolesky, operator, leaped from the front box, dropping onto fleeing patrons and injuring several. Serious victims include Paul Kolesky, Harry Goodwin 9, Albert Needham 8, and Mrs. Arthur Wilson. One exit.
Paris reports the French cabinet will back parliament in favor of the death penalty and says next week may bring several executions in the north by the guillotine. The president has long commuted death sentences to life imprisonment despite the law allowing capital punishment.
In Union City Tennessee Judge Jones condemned six Night Riders Garrett Johnson Tid Burton Roy Ransom Fred Pinion Arthur Clear and Sam Applewhite to death for the murder of Captain Quentin Ranken. Bud Morris and Bob Huffman received twenty years in prison. Defense appeals were noted.
At 12:30 a.m. near Kessler's switch on the Dayton Springfield Urbana line, a rear end crash involving interurban cars injured at least 25 passengers. The carload included Knights of Pythias members and families returning from Springfield.
Strikers from the stem dating department at the American Tobacco company's Middletown plant clashed with Greek and Hungarian workers newly hired. About seventy five men fought as they left the plant. Several were injured including John Crist who was seriously hurt by a stone. Police arrested a man on both sides.
Washington report details Senator Tillman being asked to pay $16 postage for a government typewriter franked from South Carolina to Washington. Postmaster Barnes says the item is not franking authorized. Tillman insists the typewriter, government property used in public correspondence, should not incur postage. He plans a senate speech rebutting Roosevelt’s charges over Oregon lands.
