Elusive assassin slays General Pavloff in St Petersburg garden
In St Petersburg on January 9, General Vladimir Pavloff the Military Procurator known as Hangman Pavloff was shot dead in the garden of the Chief Military Court Building near the Moika Canal. The killer, disguised as a clerk, fled through crowded streets firing about forty shots, killing a policeman and wounding a boy, and was captured after a tense pursuit. He boasted to police of the ease of the act and the case links to earlier killings of generals Ignae tieff and Von der Launitz and to a possible organizer who allegedly ordered the execution of Emperor Nicholas and other ministers.
