Philadelphia January 9 Miss Julia Curtin 21 died at her parents home from rabies six weeks after being bitten by a pet dog. Her uncle Dr Rowland G Curtin and four physicians attended. She faced death bravely continuing Christmas preparations after illness began last Friday and ether eased her final hours.
A sudden eruption at Mt Vesuvius in Naples on January 9 drew thousands of visitors who watched lava streams reach the lower station of the funicular causing damage. Indications point to rising volcanic activity possibly linked to ongoing Etna unrest.

John W. Hill former Chief of the Filtration Bureau testified in a forgery case in Philadelphia. District Attorney Bell pressed questions about allowances to D J McNichols Co for filter plant equipment and whether similar favors were given to Ryan & Kelly. Director Haddock said he authorized the allowances. Notable witnesses included Judson Harmon former U S Attorney General and J H R Bromwell Grand Secretary of Ohio Masons amid testimony on Hill’s character.
Leland W Prior president of Denison Prior Co shot himself in the Hollenden Hotel room after bucketing large copper orders wiped out his fortune. A five member banker committee was formed to investigate the firm’s affairs and wind it up. Co E Denison issued a statement on the committee’s appointment. Prior arrived Monday and did not leave the hotel until his death later that afternoon.

A carbonic acid gas cylinder exploded in the Big Four freight depot injuring and killing Charles Dinkelaker 35 an employee of the Carbonic Gas Company. The drum struck floor with 250 pounds force tearing through the roof and causing fatal injuries. Dinkelaker died at City Hospital hours later. The incident occurred near Second street and Central avenue with 800 psi pressure drums. Police and company officials offered theories but no certainty. Dinkelaker lived at 815 Freeman avenue and had four years with the company.
The Columbus Ohio senate committee on committees met to finalize chairs and make up the Senate committees. Espy of Hamilton is favored for Finance, Huffman of Butler and Gayman of Franklin vied for Chair of Finance, while Taxation heads remain unsettled with a potential dark horse.
