Will H. Hays, Republican National Committee chairman, told Colorado’s State Central Committee the GOP will win the next presidential election by a wide margin based on eighteen months of observation. He criticized the current administration, accused Democrats of misusing records for campaign mailing lists, and warned of Bolshevik threats if policy does not shift with a Republican victory.

New York report of the army transport Mercury voyage from Antwerp. During New Year dinner a hurricane swept the ship. 27 passengers required hospital care as dining tables toppled and waves swept the bridge. Three private soldiers died later from pneumonia and bronchitis. The Mercury carried 300 soldiers, 22 officers, 30 brides, and 16 crew.
Samuel Gompers, addressing the Boston Chamber of Commerce, was heckled as he criticized Police Commissioner Curtis over the Boston police strike. Counter demonstrations restored order after the luncheon, and Gompers joked about a “new police force.” He accused Curtis of provoking the strike to appease an autocrat.
In the Anti Saloon League referendum recount the wets gained 99 votes, narrowing the dry lead to 578 against the national prohibition amendment. Mistakes in Bloom Township Wood County Akron Summit County and Delaware County favored the drys and altered the tally as ballots were checked.
A four‑organization committee in Cincinnati will campaign to raise 450000 dollars to save the Swing Line of the Cincinnati & Columbus Traction. Subscriptions must reach 300000 by January 20 1920 with the rest due by February 1. Initial bond issue will fund 450000 in twenty year 6 percent bonds and 450000 in common stock with a 50 percent paid up stock bonus to buyers.
