In Astoria Oregon Fred Peters recounts the Rosecrans wreck at the Columbia mouth. Captain Johnson with a broken leg directed his crew from the pilot house as the ship struck rocks. Lifeboats failed, rescue boats plied the night to reach the lightship and life crew saved survivors while one man perished in a drifting lifeboat.
In Los Angeles on January 8, estimates put citrus losses at 25 million dollars, with some forecasts reaching 40 million. Oranges rose 50 cents per box on the wholesale market, grapefruit up 25 cents, as temperatures near 30 degrees return and growers expect an end to grove burning smudges.
The cruiser Denver arrived in Sandingo California with immigration inspectors Dan 8 Kuy kendall Gus T. Jones and Andrew Basil who were rescued from a barren island after a storm wrecked three boats Saturday. Engineer Ettore Gerolani died in the Elizabeth wreck while the group survived two days without food.

Winchester Kentucky January 8 Former Sheriff Callahan murder case witnesses for the defense weakened under cross examination as Dock Smith and Andrew Johnson denied statements by prosecution witnesses and claimed they had no part in the shooting. The defense aims to finish by Thursday night with arguments next day. Other witnesses included Captain W G B Muftikin Henry White and Oscar Hagins.
Mrs. Irwin Dodd of Boston pleads to pardon the governor's council for her husband’s two year larceny sentence. She offers to sell her raven hair, valued at about 560 dollars, to repay a 500 dollar express company loss. Assistant Penal Commissioner Driscoll urges clemency.
Duplicate copies of important measures will be introduced simultaneously in both the house and senate to speed up law making this winter. Governor elect Cox and State Chairman Finley favor joint committee consideration of administration and appropriation measures. Col Victor sheriff exposes Irene Moynahan alias Irene Moyna Han who lived as a girl for eighteen years. He was arrested in La Junta after masculine appearance led officials to believe he was a boy in girls clothing. Irene had attended Victor High School and planned to visit his father in Bisbee Arizona. His mother Mrs Moynahan had long presented him as a daughter amid parental disappointment. A letter found in the boy’s effects addressed to the father described sending a son as a New Year gift.
London dispatch reports hope for end to Balkan war with Sir Edward Grey proposing Adrianople remain Turkish under dismantled fortifications and economic limits. Diplomats seek unanimous action as Turkey, Austria, and Serbia maneuver amid calls for broader European intervention.
Count Stephan Tisza, president of the Hungarian lower house, fought another duel with sabres today in Buda Pest and wounded his opponent Count Aladar Szechenyi in the head. Dr George B Nye expected to testify on bribery schemes involving public service corporations and lobbyists. Former lawmakers A Lowry and Thomas C Col cited as expected subpoenaed figures amid ongoing corruption investigations.
ANKLIN FURNACE New Jersey Jan 8 A worker named Jace Jrover injured during a coal chute slide. He wore his fingers raw and struggled for five hours to dig free as fellow workers finally rescued him with his head above the pile.
St. Petersburg report states New Year's - Palace events scheduled for January 14 are canceled due to illness of the empress and another empress.

Stevenson James E B Watson David Mulvane and Frank Lowden attend as plans for a new national headquarters and future conferences take shape indicating lingering vitality of the GOP.
Governor Simeon E. Baldwin begins a second term as Democrats gain control of the state administration. The Senate stands Democratic by fourteen seats while the House remains nominally Republican, aided by eight progressives. Baldwin calls for popular election of the president and vice president and backs extending suffrage to taxpaying women as a step toward full franchise.
President elect Wilson spent three hours in his office in Trenton with Senators Hoke Smith of Georgia and Thomas Gore of Oklahoma. They left with their talks sealed and no formal conclusions announced. They discussed potential cabinet names and broader policy grounds, not specifics on senate committee reorganizations. In Concord New Hampshire January 8 Henry Hollis of Concord secured the Democratic caucus nomination for United States senator with 144 votes to Carr 3 and Lajoie 1. Sixty two Democrats were absent. Republicans held a caucus and offered no nomination leaving members to vote individually. Former Governor Quinby and Pillsbury, both Republicans, are contenders.
Charleston W V Jan 8 The thirty first regular session of the West Virginia legislature failed to organize the senate due to a tie after one ballot and an extraordinary session called January 2 died without action. the house also adjourned pending further steps.
