The Navy Department instructed Captain Swift aboard the battleship Connecticut, which left Hampton Roads today, to pursue every effort to locate the missing steamship Ponce overdue at New York from Porto Rico.
Judge Alton B Parker, former Democratic presidential hopeful, spoke at the Duckworth Club Jackson Day banquet and was made an honorary member. He described party principles, denounced corporate influence and the Roosevelt centralization doctrine, and criticized past Republican alignments while praising Harlan Cleveland.
Reports from Rio Blanco and Nogales describe a violent clash between strikers and troops. Thirty killed and over eighty wounded after troops fired on rioters guarding mills and jails were opened. The Board of Public Service voted to dismiss Dr C R Holmes who had served as an unpaid adviser for two years on the new hospital project. Members Marx Herschede opposed the move while Miller Bender Markley supported it. Holmes had threatened mandamus action to compel board duty before backing off after concessions.
Washington January 8 There is a good prospect of a Senate compromise measure ordering an investigation into the Brownsville affair without touching on the President authority. Senator Foraker gains a partial victory by linking an inquiry to the discharge of the Twenty fifth Infantry and avoiding constitutional questions. Senator Tillman supports fair play for all despite limited regard for the negro. Senator Lodge and Foraker seek a compromise that would send a committee to Brownsville and pay its expenses from the Senate contingency fund. Senator Daniel voices support for the President while urging an evidentiary inquiry. The Brownsville resolution is delayed to tomorrow.
Special Dispatch reports five men feared drowned after a boat capsized on the Columbia River near Butlers Washington Sunday night. Persons on shore heard cries for help and a search found no trace of the vessel. Missing include W. E. Murray county surveyor of Skamania County Carl Lindstrom William Wallace and an unknown man.
Miss Gladys Shelton seventeen daughter of a farmer near Monroe Amherst County was attacked by a black man. Five suspects were arrested and brought to Lynchburg as a mob of seventy five men chased Sheriff Beard and a deputy for two miles. The victim’s condition is precarious but expected to recover.
Daily Mail dispatch from Teheran reports the Shah of Persia died this evening with public announcement delayed until tomorrow. Vital functions failed. at 5 pm the heir apparent and ministers were summoned. palace women began mourning as harem doors were closed signaling closure. Foreign Ministers alerted late.
Texas Representative Slayden told in the House that the Brownsville assault by negro soldiers of the Twenty-fifth Infantry shows race prejudice at its core. He analyzed white and black race conditions and argued the troops were unfit to be soldiers.
