News from London reports General White repulsed Boer efforts at Ladysmith while Buller threats from Colenso draw Boer forces away. Telegraphs note Essex regiment replaces Suffolk casualties at Magersfontein and General Wauchope's last words amid Highland losses.
London reports say General White’s 9,000 men hold Ladysmith but ammunition is running low while Buller’s 30,000 men and 70 guns are unable to move effectively. Boers are pressed back but Essex garrison endurance remains strained amid scarce supplies and extended deployment.
General Buller reports from Ceasar's Camp and Wagon Hill in Natal an attack against a strong enemy, with entrenchments on Wagon Hill repeatedly taken and retaken. Mrs Alma Ladue a prominent Chicago woman traveling to visit friends was assaulted on a New Orleans street by a negro who forced from her belt watches and a pocketbook containing a negotiable certificate for 1000 and a return ticket to Chicago An arrest was made nearby but she could not identify the assailant Neither the certificate nor the ticket was recovered.
In Chicago on January 8 strikers attacked workers at the Thirty-ninth Street intercepting sewer near Wentworth Avenue. In the ensuing fight one striker, Roger O'Brien, was fatally shot as over a dozen shots were fired. Several strikers were arrested.
Miss Mary E Howe of New York obtained a $5,000 verdict in Supreme Court before Justice Truax against Mrs Frances Augusta Skinner. Howe claimed $24,750 for services as society coach companion and entertainer.
Tax Collector-elect Scott forcibly took the office with deputies aid after a barricade by ex-collector Sheehan. A gunshot wounded John O Brien, Scott’s man, and injuries occurred as police restored order. Suspect Benj Solomon arrested and released. Dread jailed for ink-stand assault.
New York dispatch reports a worsening Indian famine as three million work on relief projects. Starving parents sell children, families split, abandoned youngsters are found, cattle die, and no rain is expected before June.

Milford Haven attempted to refloat the American Line steamer Paris to take her to Belfast for repairs after running ashore off the Manacles. The effort failed as water entered the dock and the vessel began to fill.

Rev. E D Whitlock pastor of Trinity M E Church Lima faced a hand to hand clash with tailor Goudy over two repaired coats. Goudy struck first and Whitlock knocked him down three times before police intervened and allowed the minister to leave with the coats.
The Machias is ordered from San Juan to Santo Domingo to safeguard American interests during the settlement of a French claim worth 60 000 dollars. A larger naval presence is seen as prudent during the tense moment while the claim is resolved and public subscription funding reaches 341 000 dollars to pay the claim.
