German army staff issues a general order prohibiting future troops in the field from fraternizing with enemy forces after Christmas activity in the western theater. They note instances including a Christmas Day football game with British troops and a two day suspension of hostilities.

The German military government in Belgium issued an official denial of reports that Cardinal Mercier, a Belgian member of the Sacred College, was arrested. The Tijd reports guards at the Cardinal's palace and denied permissions to visit Antwerp and another city, while claiming many Antwerp clergy were arrested.
Mrs. Robert Van Looy wife of a Belgian reservist and her three children were found strangled to death at home in Montreal. Police gave no clue to the murderer and believed the victims died in their sleep after a two day absence. The children were two girls aged nine and seven and a boy eighteen months.
Mrs. Margaret Maloney aged 88 was found frozen to death in her Sidney home after living in extreme poverty. A search uncovered a strong box with several thousand dollars and seven fire insurance policies on nearby farms.
Paris Jan 7 The commission appointed Sept 23 to probe accusations of German brutalities against French civilians and soldiers reported today that a war of savage character exists. It finds pillage, ravishing, burning and murder as ordinary practices of the enemy and rejects German claims that civilians were killed by firing.
Secretary Reynolds releases a detailed Republican National Committee analysis of the November elections. It argues Republicans would win a national majority in the Electoral College, Democratic control of the next House stems from Progressive votes, and two thirds of the 1912 Progressive vote has shifted back to Republican candidates. The report includes tables and state statistics.
Washington January 7 Sir Cecil Spring-Rice reported the British government will pay damages to the family of Walter Smith the American killed by Canadian militiamen near Fort Erie and to Charles Dorsch wounded in the incident while the liability question remains undecided.
Mrs Lorin da Ballou Wartenbee celebrated her one hundredth birthday in Granville Ohio. Friends gave her $100 in gold dollars one for each year of life.
New Orleans marks the 100th anniversary of peace between English speaking nations with a three day event on the site of the last U S British conflict. The program features a 21 gun salute at 8 20 a m to honor Jackson's victory, exchanges between U S and British representatives, a monument unveiling, a Seventh Infantry parade, and a reception for officers and dignitaries.
