Cincinnati dominates the Republican State Central Committee meeting with strong boosts for Judge William H. Lueders for Governor and support for Senator Burton. John V. Campbell was elected to replace the late Fred Bader. A statewide campaign dinner set for February 26 at Memorial Hall Coary will feature Senator William Borah as principal speaker.
Major General Wood says Congress should appropriate 3 million for field guns and ammo for the regular army and 3 million for the militia. He warns that without proper guns and ammunition, US troops would face guaranteed slaughter in any first class power war.
Morris Sheehan of Hammondsville sold his wife's false teeth to buy alcohol in Wellsville Ohio after offering his glass eye as a bonus. He obtained fifty cents and bought a pint before ending up in jail in a bizarre incident reported from January.
London reports progress in cancer treatment using radium under Dr. Lazarus Bartow at Middlesex Hospital. In 1912 sixty eight cases were admitted with thirty six deaths and thirty two discharges by 1918 only one recurrence noted. Bartow attributes improved outcomes to higher radium dosages.
The wife of W M Melton, a lawyer and agent, killed last night in a murder suicide that also claimed Mrs Mary Graves Cox and her daughter Florence. Melton’s wife identified his body, and police consider the killings the result of Melton’s engagement to marry Mrs Cox triggering a fatal confrontation.
Storms sweeping from San Francisco to British Columbia flood basements block sewers and disrupt transit. In Astoria Oregon weatherbound ships multiply as nine inches of rain fall since last Saturday. Tacoma sees six inches of rain with wide area damage and railroad washouts. Seattle crews clear wires while houses risk mudslides and the storm reaches Northern California.
Washington reports a belief that Constitutionalists are receiving ammunition from across the border as Federals in northern Mexico suffer rail communications. Officials probe suspected violations of neutrality amid battles near Ojina ga and the movement of arms toward the south. Battleships Delaware Florida and Utah assigned to patrol duties.
In Milwaukee Wisconsin on January 7 the new eugenics marriage law shows its first week effects by nearly ending wed license issuance as clerks report almost no requests. Dane County Register Julius G Kroken says he will record common law marriages for ten cents each with no doctor or marriage certificate required.
Chicago board of education votes 18 to 8 to discontinue sex hygiene lectures in public schools. The course, a special term offering, will not be resumed until a general public expression is obtained. Superintendent Ella Flagg Young abstained from the discussion.
Emma and Martin Farris, both about seventy, and their daughter Louise admitted guilt in a federal case over a fake matrimonial bureau in Princeton Indiana. The trio ran a scheme using photos and letters to trap suitors, with Louise as the would be heiress. The judge suspended sentences and may later impose fines.
In Steubenville Ohio Joseph Stines, 2, allegedly insane, brandished a dynamite bomb and a revolver during grand jury testimony. He was restrained by bystanders after the bomb was revealed and the revolver produced. A panic followed but no one was injured.
A 36000 strong South African State Railway strike set for 7 am threatens suspension of all industries. Pretoria and Johannesburg workers are going out while Cape railwaymen hesitate. Prime officials Smuts and Mines Minister plan to preserve order as Citizen Defense Committees form.
The first steam vessel, the crane boat Alexander Lavalley, passed through the Panama Canal today. It carried no passengers and had been operating on the Atlantic side before advancing through during dredging operations.
Paris reports a potential duel between aviator Jules Vedrines and Rene Quinton head of the French Aerial League. Vedrines says he will fight Quinton upon returning to Paris, not Roux, while Quinton denies ordering a duel and only sought mediation for Roux’s challenge.
Concord reports indicate Harry K Thaw may be released on bail before week’s end. Public hearing witnesses testified Thaw’s freedom would not threaten public safety and described him as well behaved during custody since Sept. Sheriff Herman A Drew and Officer Clark D Stevens supported admission to bail. General Streeter noted Jerome’s absence and clarified the commission’s limited scope.
Mrs Mary Rooney, 43, died from burns after her husband Peter Rooney allegedly poured alcohol on her and set her on fire with a match. Rooney, jailed on murder charges, gave the ante mortem statement.
Eleven marchers led by Rosalie Jones reach Albany after a six and a half day trek to press for a watching at the polls bill. Governor Glynn and Assemblymen hear proposals as the hikers seek broad voting access for women in New York.
A convoy of women suffragists arrived in Annapolis, Maryland, after a 28 mile march from Baltimore. Delegate Cyrus Cummings presented their petition and letter to the House of Delegates as crowds cheered along the route. Only four women completed the entire trek, with re-enforcements meeting the group near the capital.
In Sandusky Ohio on January 7, women failed to secure a referendum on a thirty-cent gas rate after insufficient signatures. The council passed a twenty-cent ordinance the company refused, threatening shutoff. About 300 women protested the council and compelled passage of the thirty-cent ordinance.
