A deep frost across San Bernardino to Los Angeles threatens 150000 acres of oranges and lemons with losses estimated up to 40 million dollars, rail freight declines amounting to eight million. Pomona reports 86 percent damage with San Bernardino county worst hit at 90 percent. Mature trees largely spared. nursery stock heavily damaged.
In Salt Lake City Utah water is sold by the gallon from municipal sprinkling carts due to a sudden cold snap. Many laundries have shut down and relief is hoped as the back of the cold wave appears to break. Tonight’s temperature was ten above zero.
Heavy rains pushed the Ohio and Great Kanawha rivers higher with the river at a high stage. The swift current drove the Pittsburg towboat Charles Brown against the bank eleven miles below Gallipolis, sinking two coal boats for a total loss.
John Pancost a 50 year old farmer of Belmont was found dead in a snow drift along a road near his home. Death appears due to heart failure brought on by overexertion while trying to aid his horse.
In pea soup fog the White Star liner Adriatic ran aground south of Governor's Island while entering the channel. Pilot Edward Brown and Captain Hayes anchored as water shoaled, freeing at 5:45 p.m. with rising tide and engine help. The Hamilton hit Fort Wadsworth foundation, returning with a hole in its bow. passengers to be reassigned aboard another vessel.
Mrs Lillian Gross testified that she identified Doc Smith and Andrew Johnson as the men who killed her father Ed Callahan former Breathitt county sheriff. She said she warned them not to shoot and that God showed her where to look, with Callahan living in fear of assassination for years. A general alarm was issued for Kelly.
In Monongahela Pennsylvania a six foot blacksnake invaded a church Christmas tree at the Hagle Evangelical Sunday school. The snake bit a toy bird and caused a chaotic rush for exits during a musical rehearsal. The tree was toppled and the snake found in a hollow trunk cavity and killed.
In Danville Kentucky Jack Cole and Henry Marshall wagered on hitting a hat with a rifle bullet. The shot passed through the hat and Marshall's skull, killing him instantly. Coleman was arrested.
Chief Passafies, a Chippewa Indian long known in Solon Springs, died at his home in Superior on January 7 at age 115, ending a storied life in the community.
In East Orange on January 7, Mrs. James E. Vandyke’s heirloom diamond ring worth 400 dollars was saved when plumbers found a sturdy oak root had blocked a waste pipe. The root blocked the drain and kept the ring from reaching the sewer, until the root was removed and the ring dropped free.
The House money trust committee in executive session planned action against witnesses William Rockefeller and George G. Henry of Solomon & Co bankers New York City. Henry refused to disclose names of banks and officers tied to a California Petroleum syndicate profit. Rockefeller health concerns were also examined. The full committee will prepare a contempt charge against Henry and seek district attorney action before a grand jury. The hearing also reviewed Equitable Mutual New York Metropolitan insurance affairs and stock moves involving Morgan Stillman Baker and Bankers Trust.
Affidavits from Dr. Walter F. Chappelle and Dr. Samuel Lamont describe William Rockefeller as gouty inflammation of the larynx and windpipe requiring six operations. The physicians say he cannot speak above a whisper and that forcing testimony would endanger his life, prompting the house money trust committee to debate his appearance.

A wheel on a baggage car broke causing six cars of train No 15 from Cincinnati to Chicago to derail near Stockwell Indiana. One man Edwin Zunner of Rochester New York died. three others were fatally injured and thirty three others injured. A special train moved the wounded to LaFayette hospitals.
The oil tank steamer Rosecrans ran aground in a fifty five mile gale near Pea Cock Spit while entering the Columbia River and later sank with thirty one of her crew of thirty seven. One survivor reached Tioga Washington and three others were rescued by lifeboat crews from Fort Canby and Point Adams.
Dr W M Beck of Clarkfield Minnesota operated on himself using a mirror to guide a cut below the jaw. He scraped bone and sewed the wound, but the growth remained threatening the jaw. A nurse aided the self operation before collapsing from strain.
In Toluca Mexico twenty federal soldiers were killed when two government detachments misidentified each other during a convoy operation after an attack on a passenger train. The friendly fire incident occurred as both units moved toward the wreck site, with casualties mounting before recognition of comradeship.
Columbus dispatch reports Rep. Herbert S. Bigelow of Cincinnati will introduce a bill to revoke public service franchises granted for more than twenty five years. The measure targets a fifty year Cincinnati street railway charter and may affect Dayton firms, with provisions for regulation of service and rates by municipal ordinances. Bigelow argues constitutional power to revoke such privileges exists. no broad revocation is intended.
