INDIANAPOLIS Jan 7 Republicans nearly failed to organize the Senate. The House elected Henry C. Pettit Speaker after a late start due to a timing dispute. Pettit urged economy and pledged impartiality while committees were named and the body adjourned to await the governor’s message.
In Lansing Michigan on January 7 the joint legislature heard retiring Governor Pingree outline reforms. He urged abolition of party conventions, adoption of direct vote and Australian ballots, equal taxation of corporate property, uniform two cent rail fares, no tying acts for quasi public franchises, creation of a State Board of Arbitration, and support for inheritance and income taxes. He also called for annual legislature sessions capped at sixty days.
In Boston on January 7 Governor Wolcott was inaugurated. His inaugural address touched on restricted legislation for trust companies, signaling a push to tighten controls and regulate the sector.
Auguste Mo Jan 7 Governor Powers took his seat and delivered an inaugural address urging reform. He stated that young men have generally ceased ... and called for renewed public virtue and state support for education and industry.
Official papers from the U S Supreme Court show the old case of ex State Auditor Poe against the Western Union Telegraph Company has been finally settled. The agreement upholds the Nichols law tax assessment as legal for the telegraph company. The 1895 Cincinnati ruling by Judge Page had held similar, but the company appealed on valuation grounds.

Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune from Woodfields Ohio reports a boiler explosion in the Fisher Oil Company site near Woodfields. Two men died, three injured, as the boiler being repaired blew up. An unknown worker was atop the boiler when it burst, hurled about 100 feet. Injured men' identities not yet confirmed.
Special dispatch from Bismarck notes Hansbrough will be renominated for U.S. Senate by acclamation after Col. W. H. Robinson announced that pledges from Hansbrough to support sound money and protection satisfied the national party. A caucus will convene Saturday night to formalize the nomination despite earlier opposition, with the Legislature holding a Republican joint-ballot majority of 46.
Crown Point Ind Jan 7 The first death in Jerusalem history occurred when Mrs Carl Shickner oldest resident died yesterday Since its founding the town had no burial ground and no fatalities though a land boom in 18% drew Chicago capitalists to build a factory and housing Until people fell ill the town saw no doctor or post office arrangement and was nicknamed Jerusalem by locals before a post office was established.

Chicago millionaire Jefferson C. Greer faces Beulah Free's breach of promise lawsuit and plans to contest the claim. Reports from Zanesville say Greer’s private secretary Charles Girard has been visiting Lexingon and inquiring about Miss Free, who stays with her father in Lexington.
Melbourne Jan 7 report says Palmerston a seaport village at the junction of the overland telegraph and the ocean cable to Java was swept over by a hurricane. The place is almost wrecked and telegraphic communication with it is interrupted.
Miss L Dray ton Astor heiress and J J Astor descendant works as a chambermaid at Hotel Sicer Sedalia under Drath Langdon. Her father W D Astor died in St Louis. she awaits a 20000 legacy from cousin Miss Drexel in 1897 and October deeds to 480 acre Saline County farm. Attorney Garesche says wills may leave her about 70000 plus 5000 annual income from J J Astor estate after May. Miss Astor is a Drexel grandniece and J J Astor’s relation.
Harman Hawes towed his wife and six children in a cart from Hurley County toward Nashville on a four mile per day trek. With no funds or horse, he acts as the animal himself to reach the exposition and revival hoped to come to Tennessee.
Wilmington Del January 7 A flood of unfounded rumors surrounds the Harvey murder case. William P Harvey father of the victim was examined before the grand jury today and discharged from custody this evening. He returned home without any suspicion of involvement in the crime.
Moritz Bauer, president of the Manhattan Investment and Construction Company, was arrested in New York on an indictment accusing him of swindling real estate investors out of money. The alleged scheme involved land in Westchester County and other parts of Greater New York, with investors not receiving deeds.
Michael Harney, an inmate of Dayton's National Military Home, fell from the big bridge over Eagle Creek while intoxicated. His body was found embedded in the ice. He had spent $1,400 at the home since last July and was to return there today.
An Atlanta afternoon paper reports that every trust operating in Georgia has fallen to the Calvin antitrust act passed by the recent General Assembly. The American Tobacco Company Potash Snuff Coffee Match and other trusts are notified robbers and merchants state that existing contracts are unlawful and no longer binding. The market is opened to competition across Georgia.
Boston dispatch reports Jesse Pomeroy, now a young man, tried to escape Massachusetts Prison by digging with a large nail. He was found near the outer wall of a special cell where he is confined for life. The incident reveals renewed security concerns at the facility.
The steam ship Opitica arrived today from Hong Kong Yokohama and Honolulu. Minister Willis, who has been ill at Honolulu, is reported to be slightly improved in health.
Ezekiel Hendricks of Lawrenceburg Kentucky dies at age ninety leaving a large family of grown sons all of whom are Republicans and related to Indiana's former vice president Thomas A. Hendricks. The obituary notes his county ties and long life.
Columbus Jan. 7 The Third Ward Paris Club of Cincinnati was incorporated today by W. E. Kennedy and others to prepare for the courtation in 1900. The Cincinnati company increases its stock by 15,000 to 30,000 amid local corporate activity.
London dispatch reports a Vienna rumor that King Humbert of Italy suffered a slight stroke of paralysis, not a cold as previously stated, fueling speculation about his illness. The note reflects international concern over the monarch’s health.
The Wailer murder case began in Paintsville today and continued until tomorrow morning due to absent Commonwealth witnesses. A large crowd gathered in town as proceedings paused temporarily.

She sends a suicide note blaming her husband for hiding money and asks her sons in Colorado to be informed. She identifies her son William Diven of the candy business as prominent in church work.
A white man pursues an armed Black outlaw, Cooper, who swore to marry his sweetheart Eva Hickson. He shot and killed West Wilson and family, Preston Smith, and several others, wounding and slashing victims with a bowie knife and axe. A manhunt spans from Maysville to Sumter as towns gather, with reports of lynching urges and vigilante action.
Colonel Harrison Gray Otis editor of the Los Angeles Times is to confer with President-elect McKinley on California cabinet representation. A prominent Pacific Coast choice, Otis is an Ohio-born journalist and wartime veteran noted for bold reform writing and influence in Southern California politics.
CHICAGO January 7. Several banks with deposits in the defunct Illinois National Bank were warned of the danger and withdrew funds in time to avoid losses. Henry W. Austin, president of Oak Park State Bank, said he received notice of the ill condition during the week before the failure.

Second indictment charges Deputy U S Marshal Burlington and Deputy Jailer Jishbey with forming a group to intimidate the Henderson Jailer during the transfer of four Owensboro suspects held for Officer White’s murder.
