President outlines a new move to secure international peace through a Lae backed pact among American nations. The program is described as supported by Wilson era ideals and aims to expedite cooperation and stability across the hemisphere.
President Wilson outlined a Pan American policy to unite nations for political independence and territorial integrity, arbitration of disputes, and prohibiting revolutionary expeditions. Lima Peru was chosen for the 1921 session, with delegates noting closer hemispheric ties as progress.
Among Persia's survivors Rajah of Kapurthala noted as a famous Spih dancer known as Anita Delgardo before marriage to the Indian potentate was among the survivors. Jewels valued at 4 million dollars from Kapurthala heirlooms reportedly lost with the ill fated ship.
Explosion aboard the Aztec, a Norwegian oil tank steamship in Erie Basin Brooklyn, killed and injured several crewmen. The ship had carried oil to Bordeaux for the French army. authorities say the blast likely formed a gas pocket in the bilge and tank supports, an accident.
The Giuseppe Verdi arrived at New York with two three inch rifles aboard manned by Royal Italian Navy gunners. Officials said clearance papers will be refused until guns are dismounted and removed. Washington, Jan. 6 A Kanawha Packet Co steamer Kanawha struck a pier and sank nine miles below Parkersburg. Three bodies recovered nine missing. Survivors reported forty five aboard including ten passengers and thirty five crew. Divers to inspect wreck. inquiries opened by government steamboat inspectors and state railway officials.
In Lexington a transfusion was performed to aid Mrs H B Curd. Her anemia patient received a large volume from her 20 year old daughter Grace with possible further blood from her son Wilbur if needed.
Chicago mourns as Matthew W. Pinkerton, head of the Pinkerton United States Detective Agency, dies at his home after a two month illness. Born in Mt. Eaton Ohio in 1852, he led the famed agency.
Special Cable reports Mt. Vesuvius on the rampage in Naples with night activity intensifying. Explosions roll after explosions, and continuous rumblings rise as vast rock and lava is hurled 1,000 to 1,500 yards. Prof. Malladra says the crater is rapidly filling, claiming present danger is excluded.
Secretary of War Garrison opens hearings on the administrations wartime defense policy. He argues federal pay for militia remains unlikely and urges full federalization of the militia with a standing army and civilian volunteers. Special Dispatch to The Commercial Tribune reports that four Morgan children died in a Martinsville West Virginia fire after the upper rooms where they slept were cut off. Mr Morgan suffered likely fatal burns rescuing a fifth child, the father escaping with severe injuries as the blaze cut off the upstairs.
Fire at 2 30 this morning swept the Adams Express Depot at Pearl and Butler streets. Flames spread through the L shaped depot threatening Cordesman Rechtin and Schriver plants. Safes on the second floor held several hundred thousand dollars. about 50 000 saved, others abandoned. A bridge collapsed as crews fought the blaze and a firefighter may have fallen.
The body of 19 year old Ohio State University student George Thomas was found with a bullet wound to the heart on the Big Walnut River bank near Columbus. A revolver lay beside him, and officials say heavy university work may have driven him to a nervous breakdown. His older brother Jay Thomas vanished in a similar way two years earlier and was killed while attempting to board a train.
In Washington on January 6 the Senate debated foreign relations as Senator Fall urged a resolution asking President Wilson for full information on recognizing the Carranza government. Senators Lodge and Fall pressed for clarity before confirming an Ambassador to Mexico.

The Persia sinking near the Mediterranean maimed 333 including two Americans. United States Consul Robert N. McNeely and Rev. Homer D. Salisbury among casualties. Salisbury, a missionary, boarded at Marseilles en route to India. his mother is in Battle Creek and a brother in Glendale.

London reports that three labor ministers Arthur Henderson William Brace and George H Roberts resigned from the coalition cabinet after the Labor Congress vote against the governments conscription bill by a wide margin The congress with over 1000 delegates and 3 000 000 workers rejected a pro compulsion motion and urged the Labor party to oppose the bill in all stages in the House of Commons The public scene included the singing of The Red Flag and strong anti compulsion rhetoric from union leaders and MPs alike
