Three of the forty sailors aboard the sunken submarine S-4 were recovered from the engine room. Divers pulled the bodies to the surface and placed them in baskets aboard the Maury for transport to Boston for identification. One was Lieut. Joseph A. McGinley of Norristown Pa. The search for others continued as weather hindered operations.

Father jailed after fire kills Dendy children in New Jersey
W G Dendy, father of five children killed when a New Jersey home burned, was arrested on an investigation charge after a neighbor's testimony led prosecutors. Coroner Boyce said the children's heads were crushed. timber collapse might have caused the deaths. The coroner would not reveal the neighbor's name and will continue the inquiry.

Tragedy in Indianapolis: Grandmother Drowns Two Grandchildren and Herself
In Indianapolis on January 4, Mrs Clara McNeil Irwin drowned her two grandchildren Elizabeth Reed Shonle twenty months and Irene Shonle five and a half years and then killed herself. Horace Shonle the children's mother found them in a bathtub after returning from a club meeting. Neighbors and passersby offered aid but all three died. The family said the grandmother had suffered despondency since her husband died about a year earlier.

Coroner Swing ruled an electric shock from a bathroom heater caused the death of Mrs. Emme Slaline at 1208 Lowden Avenue Mt. Adams. The victim, found unconscious in the tub by her daughter Maggie, died before medical help arrived. Coroner cited a short circuit lifting danger when the victim reached for the heater. A police dog riding with Mrs. W. W. Walker of Huron South Dakota is believed to have saved her life when a plane piloted by Merle Buck crashed at an Arkansas airport.
