A tramp steamer named Julia Luckenbach was torn apart and sank after a collision with the British Indrakula off Tangier bar in Chesapeake Bay. Fourteen crew members perished, including Captain H A Gilbert and his wife, with eight survivors later rescued by the Danish steamer Pennsylvania after a six hour gale and several failed rescue attempts.
Francisco Abarno a Bronx stationary engineer slept whispered Angelina and revealed his second wife in Brooklyn where she found his first wife with seven children. He had married Angelina Settiducati in 1899 and kept both marriages secret. Police held him for trial in 2000 dollars bail after his wife who filed the complaints showed two marriage certificates.
Three 17 year old girls from Austin suburbs left with money and clothes, reportedly aiming for the Pacific coast where a rich uncle and former boyfriends reside. One carried $1,022.50. The runaways are Florence Clark, Jennie Torguson, and Violet Potts, all named with family addresses in Chicago.
In a 20 mile gale, tenants in the Singer building report plaster and doors reacting as the tower swayed. Law firm workers describe a two to three inch back and forth motion, with some dizziness among stenographers. Major A J Kleecker disputed claims of a 13th floor crack.
The scout cruiser Salem with the navy s most powerful wireless gear will start tests this month at Arlington. Between January 15 and February 1 she will flash messages to Arlington from Philadelphia and Hampton Roads and after February 7 she will go to sea to receive messages 3,000 miles from Arlington. She will attempt radiograms from Gibraltar and other distant ports.
New York Jan 4 The attorney for Sam Rockefeller and his physician will appear before the Pujo money investigating committee in Washington while Rockefeller remains away. Dr Chappell will certify that Rockefeller’s health is precarious and could risk his life if he testifies. Garver will urge a committee physician if needed.
George A Sipp former Baltic hotel proprietor at Lexington Avenue and 124th Street testified to long payment of police protection money before an aldermanic committee on Dec 18 He was arrested in Atlantic City on a felony warrant while living at the Wilshire hotel under the alias Grant R MeTulty
President Taft announced support for submitting the Panama canal dispute with Great Britain to The Hague for arbitration at a Waldorf luncheon. He urged restraint and warned that fear of loss tests faith in arbitration, while condemning Senate defeat of arbitration treaties with England and France.
