Martin A Ryerson donated land valued at 34000, John D Rockefeller pledged to match cash totaling 68000, Marshall Field added land valued at 135000, with Rockefeller promising 200000 more for a gym and athletic facilities. The university will receive 169000 in value and 234000 in cash from Rockefeller.
Washington January 4 The illness of former Secretary of State John W. Foster has worsened and doctors fear pneumonia developed. He was restless last night and had a painful coughing spell today raising concerns for his condition.
Chicago audience hears Carl Schurz critique colonial policy under Hayes. He warns that imperial expansion risks despotism at home, predicts steps from Puerto Rico to the Philippines, and urges avoiding union with Britain to preserve democracy.

New York shows personal property worth about 600000, with total estate likely around 7000000 including nearly 6000000 in Ohio real estate. Calvin S Brice died December 15 from pneumonia. his wealth and charitable circles noted.
