Mary M Emery widow of Thomas J Emery donated 100000 to the Cincinnati Art Museum accepted January 1. Saturdays at Eden Park palace of art will be free to the public starting February 2. Previously visitors paid ten cents on Saturdays and Sundays.
Judge Landis in Chicago overruled a demurrer to eight indictments against Standard Oil in the Elkins law case. He sustained a demurrer as to two indictments for technical defects and ruled on issues of publication rates, terminal charges, and the effect of the 1906 rate law on actions begun under the Elkins act. The ruling addresses whether indirect methods to obtain favors were prohibited and how existing penalties apply after repeal.
Terrell Thompson a 24 year old stenographer at Merchants National Bank in this city died by his own hand in a room at the Emery Hotel. He owed about 80 dollars to A F Rice vice president of the bank and had separated from his wife. A note to his father and mother asked forgiveness and urged care for his siblings. The coroner and hotel staff contested the time of death with evidence suggesting the act occurred overnight.
In New York on January list, the government secured a jury trial on all three counts accusing MacAndrews Forbes and Continental Tobacco of forming a monopoly in the paste industry. J. B. Duke of American Tobacco testified detailing buyouts to control root supply and resisting price increases.
A masked gunman forced his way into W. H. Jacobs home on Madison Avenue Hyde Park. He robbed Jacobs of about $2 and a gold watch after taking the servant and Mr. Jacobs to a second floor room. He cut the telephone wires and fled via a street car, prompting a police search. Mrs. Jacobs collapsed. she is described as in a critical condition. Police suspect prior knowledge of the home from former servants.
Lawrence County prosecutor closes case on the 1904 murder confession of George W Harris saying it does not establish guilt for Miss Sarah Schaefer the Latin teacher of Bedford Ind Harris will instead be imprisoned for two to fourteen years on a shorter charge ordered to the state penitentiary.
Mrs Avis Van Wagenen daughter of Mrs E C Stearns of Cincinnati was found dead in her Syracuse kitchen from gas asphyxiation. She had retired after not turning off the gas following a bath and was discovered by a servant and Mr Tyrrell the following morning. She is survived by her mother a brother and two sisters.
In Vicksburg Mississippi on January 3 Will Harvey a Black man was hanged at Moyersville three minutes before notice of commutation reached the Issaquena County Sheriff. Governor Vardaman had commuted the sentence to life imprisonment notifying Harvey's attorney who alerted the Sheriff. Harvey had been sentenced for the March murder of a man named Pete Bromo.
Genoa reports actress Eleonora Duse is ill with pneumonia. The famed performer, namesake of Italian theater, is receiving care as doctors monitor her condition.
A cable from London reports the Japanese Government has purchased large quantities of cordite and is shipping it to Japan as fast as manufacturers can deliver it.
Columbus dispatch reports daily additions to the field for the Cincinnati Insolvency Judgeship. General A M Warner, prominent Cincinnati lawyer and former Grand Army of the Republic commander, urged Governor Harris for the vacancy citing his wartime service and standing among senior lawyers.
The Senate adjourned after two and a half hours of debate over President Roosevelt’s order to dismiss the Twenty-fifth Infantry for the Brownsville incident. Senator Culberson defended the action, while Senator Foraker urged a speedy Senate investigation into the discharge and the role of Captain McDonald of the Texas Rangers.
