New York Jan 2 J P Morgan & Co withdraws from more than twenty seven directorates and George F Baker says he will follow. The move signals a potential end to interlocking directorates as Wall Street reacts with shock and speculation about a broader policy shift.
Gene Montani now imprisoned in Sing Sing claims two police officials offered to free him for five thousand dollars after his 1912 taxicab robbery arrest. He spoke with Assistant District Attorney Frederick Groehl, who said he would investigate. Montani was the cab driver who reported the robbery and later was convicted with the gang despite earlier statements.
Hamilton County Liquor League held its annual meeting at Central Turner Hall where officers were installed. Rogers Wright urged saloon keepers to follow the Greenland law, warns that ignorance is no excuse and calls for unified action to preserve the liquor trade amid growing regulation and anti saloon activity.
In Cleveland Ohio January 2 Juvenile Court Judge George S Addams ended a plan to keep a wife and seven children with a man living with his mistress Walter Moore and Mrs Dollie Churchill were each sentenced to one year in the workhouse and fined 300. Mrs Moore and the seven children testified the husband deserted them June 2 and moved in with Churchill prompting the move to Churchill’s home to survive.
In San Francisco Andrew B. Nelson a seafaring former schooner owner was jailed aboard the Willamette after a hand to hand struggle with Captain Reiner in the latter's cabin. Nelson accused of assault with intent to murder and held on $10 000 bail with accomplice Joseph Laramie.
Estelle Saylor 21 daughter of Rev David Saylor of Lawrenceburg Indiana is held in Chicago on larceny charges. She and two young men, Bob Keller 24 and Harry Shoop alias Harry Stone 19, are linked to a string of thefts including two gowns valued 1500 to 2000 dollars each and more than 3500 dollars in stolen goods found in their rooms. The trio allegedly ran away with Keller claiming marriage in Covington Kentucky.
Warren Ohio January 2. H B Loftus 23 and Donald Coffett 25 of Youngstown are jailed and to be arraigned on blackmail charges. They allegedly demanded 75 dollars from Dr C A Archer after an examined patient fell ill. Sheriff Rose says both men confessed. The ruse began a month ago with two women visiting the doctor and Coffett presenting the bill receipt.
In Erie on January 2 three men were robbed aboard the steamer Dunham docked there. Robert B Edwards from Chicago was locked in the icebox after the assault, then Carl Saared from Brooklyn and Alfred Berg of Cleveland were similarly attacked and detained through the night until near noon.
High waves along the Santa Cruz water front have washed sands away five to six feet revealing money jewelry and other valuables lost by summer visitors. During low tide men and boys search the beach picking up gold pieces and silver money of various denominations. A purse containing $60 was found.
Rome reports Prof. Giacomo Boni director of excavations in the Forum and Palatine uncovered yesterday in the Palatine arena the Mundus central point of ancient Rome marked by Romulus furrow. Earlier New Year 13899 Boni found the Niger Lapis marking Romulus grave in the Forum.
Copperfield Oregon is placed under martial law after Miss Fern Hobbs demanded resignations of City Council members accused of liquor ordinance violations. Colonel Lawson leads a raid on saloons and arrests all city officials, gasoline to ship bar fixtures. The action follows a protest petition and Mayor Stewart's refusal to close premises.
Washington reports new ICC order cuts express charges about 17 percent on average and requires improved service methods. Officials note 1913 holiday express business fell roughly 26 percent from 1912, attributing the decline to the parcel post.
