Secretary Bonaparte acts on court martial findings against Commander Lucien Young of the Bennington for negligence of duty following the San Diego explosion. Young receives a letter of reprimand as punishment. Ensign Wade’s case remains undecided.
Albany dispatch reports James W. Wadsworth Jr. of Livingston County nominated by the Republican Assembly caucus for Speaker with 75 of 104 votes. George M. Palmer faces him for the Democrats in tomorrow's session as the chamber convenes.
Clarence A Barnum his wife Louise 23 and sons Chester 16 and daughter were found dead in a Rochester Michigan farmhouse after an ax attack followed by a self inflicted gunshot. The scene showed a brutal struggle at breakfast with blood splattered rooms and a gun near the father’s body. Despondency over a poor harvest and a recent farm sale are cited as factors. William Barnum editor of The College News Letter is mentioned among relatives.
In Millport Kentucky area a country schoolteacher Miss Elvira Hester sues Boston Swaney after an incident over books. She allegedly whipped his two sons and later knocked Swaney unconscious with a poker breaking his nose and jaw then pursued him to the road.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune Lexington Ky Jan 2 Breathing life into conflict weary county Judge S S Taulwee and former Judge James Hargis met in Jackson and pledged mutual good will and co operation to restore law and order. Hargis agreed to dismiss the cases ending the feud and Jackson rejoiced at Tallabee s Hotel with town hall celebrations.
Broker John W Ballmann of this city wins Supreme Court verdict after long contest that threatened imprisonment for alleged contempt of court. Grand Jury previously summoned him to reveal books showing dealings under A Smith and A Johnson during Dec 1904 to Feb 1905 in connection with a $55,000 matter. Continued on Tenth Page.
At the Ohio statehouse in Columbus on January 2 Governor Herrick’s reforms win backing. In the Senate Huffman bills push clean primaries and Ward’s measure eyes a new penitentiary. the House opens with no new bills as Speaker Thompson vows to bar lobbyists, adjournment set for next week.
A Santo Domingo revolutionary force of about 250 men camps on the Santiago Puerto Plata road and besieges Puerto Plata blocking access except for foreign ships or protected nationals. The gunboat Independencia and allied troops threaten Santiago, with Morales and General Jiminez aiming to retake power amid tensions. The War Department reports no faction yet interferes with customs service though unrest looms near Monte Cristi.
At Judge Taulbee's ball in Jackson Kentucky on January 2 the Hargis peace meeting drew both sides including Judge Hargis and Ed Callahan. The Cockrill faction stayed aloof as no full reconciliation emerged amid tense atmosphere and guarded promises from some officials. Grace Taggart reports from Wooster that she and her sons have left for California and may return by January 15.
Judge Thomas H. Paynter won the Democratic nomination for United States Senator on the first joint caucus ballot in Frankfort. The vote showed Paynter with 59, Blackburn 34, Halde man 10, Smith 1, needing 53. Paynter’s victory ends a hard fought struggle and signals party unity under Governor Beckham’s administration.
