A brutal confrontation in Nicaragua leaves 29 U.S. Marines dead as a blizzard cripples the nation. Reports detail subzero cold sweeping the country and the impact on transportation and crops, with Chicago recording the highest mortality from exposure.
In Buffalo on New Year’s Day a party at Peacock Inn on Washington Street was shot up by three men two masked seeking former boxer Roger Lavin. Proprietor Michael George was killed a patron girl gravely wounded Charlotte Gais er a 20 year old stenographer died of a bullet in the brain Eugene Grayson 26 shot in the left foot Jo se Baggs 26 and Wilbur Metz 25 were both wounded. Deputies say Lavin fought one attacker earlier and deputies know the identities of the gunmen. The trio fled after firing their revolvers. Continued on second page.
Los Angeles reports investigators in the Appleby case found in Dr. Charles McMillan’s apartment jewelry valued at about 50 000 dollars believed to belong to Amelia Appleby. Detectives seized diamond rings, pearl necklaces, bracelets and other items including a hypodermic needle and narcotics. A newspaper clipping about Mrs Appleby’s body was also recovered, tying the physician to the period of her death.

The escapees named are Joe Carr Theodore Garrison Charles Stibbs Bradley Griffin and Henry Johnson with authorities seeking their capture.
In London Ontario on January 1 15 year old James Compton and 10 year old Ronald were saved from a crumbling ice floe on the Thames River. Police and firemen hauled them from peril after a hook and line dropped from a bridge finally drew them to safety. Fellow youth Frank Rustin 14 was rescued when the floe section he stood on broke away and drifted near the bank.
A. R. Leach, 27, and wife Louise, 23, were found dead at their Phillips home. Authorities believe Leach killed his wife then himself. their two year old child, weak from hunger, was found in an unlit oven and expected to recover after food was scarce. Neighbors had not seen the family since Thursday. the tragedy surfaced after a messenger failed to gain entry.
Guests at the Hotel Gibson celebrated the leap year arrival when a thief moved through a seventh floor cloak room stealing three fur garments. The items included a $1,000 fur coat owned by Mrs. Harvey Berg of 786 East Mitchell and a $500 fur coat owned by Miss Lillian Schwartz of 4021 Red Bud avenue plus a $50 overcoat owned by Sidney Schwartz of the same address.
The Scranton Sun plant in Scranton Pennsylvania was hit by about sixteen sticks of dynamite just after midnight on New Year's, injuring three and scattering glass among revelers. Mrs. Clarence Vanderhoff, 28, of Dover New Jersey, was killed when the sport model car she rode in struck a concrete abutment at a Jersey Central crossing in Kenilworth. Passenger Les ter Turner, 24 of Fulton, was wounded and hospitalized after the crash. Vanderhoff was reportedly separated from her husband.
