Amid frigid dawn, a series of three explosions and fires devastate Norfolk business district including the Monticello Hotel. One firefighter died, others wounded. 2,500 marines and bluejackets help patrol the streets. Loss likely above 2 million dollars with many displaced.
Ohio and Indiana report snow on Wednesday with warmer conditions later in the week. West Virginia notes snow and rising temperatures, then generally fair Thursday. Dr Harry H Lewis a Louisville physician is jailed on a murder charge after his wife Mrs Susan Lewis was found dead in their home at 1680 South Fourth Street. Neighbor alerted him and Dr Edwin Bruce reported the scene noting the doctor appeared intoxicated and could not give a coherent account. Autopsy reports death by strangulation.
The sarcophagus with Charles X of France and his family, exiled since 1830, has been moved by Austrian authorities from Castanavizza to the Carmelite monastery in Vienna. The royal group includes the Duke of Angoulême, Charles X’s eldest son, his wife, Count de Chambord and his wife, and Princess Theresa Modena.
Berlin dispatch reported by the Frankfurter Zeitung says an importing syndicate is being organized in Berlin to bring breadstuffs from Russia to Germany. The German government is said to hold a half interest in the undertaking. Similar syndicates are noted as forming in Austria Hungary Bulgaria and Turkey.
In Wauseon Ohio Frederick Lehman, Fulton County farmer, stands trial for the murder of his wife Grace last September. Final arguments conclude tomorrow noon with the jury to be charged immediately. State Attorneys pressed for a first degree murder verdict with no mercy recommendation.
London reports Sir Cecil Spring-Rice and Lord Bertie will soon retire from the British Embassies in Washington and Paris. The Daily Chronicle adds a rumour that Sir George Buchanan may resign as Ambassador to Petrograd.
William J. Young boatswain and crew member of an American steamship was found by the lighthouse tender Larkspur on an ice floe in Ambrose channel about eight miles from shore. Exposed and unable to identify himself he was rescued after falling overboard while fixing the falls on a small boat.

Sibert and Richard M Blatchford of the US Army arrived at an Atlantic port aboard a steamship after serving with American expeditionary forces in France They have been ordered home to assist in training for overseas duty Mann said Rainbow division troops are billeted in good order and progressing in intensive training The generals sent a hearty New Years greeting to the homeland and the American people
Dr. Asa W. Chamberlain of Iowa faces murder charges in Goochland County for the October death of his brother Judge Albert P. Chamberlain. Attorneys expect a plea of guilty with mercy sought, citing a quarrel over family affairs. The body was buried on the brother's farm with parts hidden under fence posts. Trial begins tomorrow at Goochland Courthouse.
New York reports total thrift and war savings stamp sales by post offices at 2 758 114 dollars with New York City leading in war savings and thrift stamps. Chicago ranks second while Cincinnati stands third with sales of 32 000 war savings and 106 000 thrift stamps.

The honor places Mr Page among a group of leading universities that have recognized America’s WWI entry with degrees, after Oxford Aberdeen Cambridge and Edinburgh.
An Amsterdam dispatch says Kaiser William II is editing a three volume work titled Kaiser William in War Times. The proofs are being revised for submission to the General Staff and the Foreign Office and will include all speeches delivered during the war.
Portland Ore Jan 1 1918 Colonel Brice P Disque head of spruce production appeals to Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen warning against spies and urging loggers and mill men to crank up output to 11 000 000 feet of spruce per month and make up months with only 3 000 000 feet while stressing workers are soldiers in the war against Germany and a day off means two days of Kaiser’s work.
The Star reports the government has taken over the British Museum to serve as offices for the Air Board. The museum founded in 1753 houses antiquities drawings prints a library of over two million volumes and valuable manuscripts and charters.
French High Commissioner to the United States Captain Andre Tardieu warned that the entente faces the hardest war period yet but promised it could yield decisive results in the next six months if Allies manage resources and sacrifice. He cited need for men wheat oil ships locomotives and urged American support while praising Allied morale. He declined a cabinet post to preserve his commission.
A Petrograd dispatch reports Bolsheviks arrested members of the American Railway Mission at Irkutsk in Siberia. The U S State Department said it had no confirmation but would inquire through Ambassador Francis in Petrograd. The mission aided Siberian rail rehabilitation begun under Kerensky with several hundred personnel in scattered detachments along the line.
Rome reports Italians forced the Austrians to withdraw from the Zenson bridgehead on the Piave after an energetic Italian offensive. The bend on the west bank is now Italian held. Allied artillery activity remained steady with several air raids causing casualties.
