The new city government assumed power at City Hall amid music and flowers. Mayor Frederick Spiegel, ex Mayors and officials attended a swearing ceremony, with Mrs Spiegel prominent in the reception. Council appointments and committees were announced as the new administration organized.

More than 300 unemployed men waited on South Peoria street as the Rufus F. Dawes Hotel opened its doors and offered bed and soup for small coins. The charity hotel, founded by Charles G. Dawes in memory of his drowned son, charged five cents for a bed and bath, two cents for soup, and offered coffee rolls and doughnuts at modest prices. Private rooms cost ten cents. many guests enjoyed a shower after registering in the snowstorm.
At Washington New Year events Secretary Bryan hosted a casual breakfast for the Diplomatic Corps with over 300 guests. Secretaries Daniels and Garrison kept open house and the day featured informal attire and semitropical decorations.

Miss Hazel Curtis, 20, daughter of Preston Curtis a railroad contractor, was fatally burned after her dress caught fire from an open grate in her Columbus home. Neighbors W G Benham and family extinguished the flames and she was taken to a hospital for treatment. her condition is listed as serious.
Mrs. Carroll Smalley Page wife of Senator Page of Vermont died suddenly of heart failure at her Hyde Park home in Vermont. News of her death reached official circles in Washington today.
