President Roosevelt greeted more than six thousand guests at the White House in a long New Year reception marked by diplomatic dress and broad representation from all states. The event, noted for its festive mood and the absence of formality, was followed by other gatherings in Washington and a later cross country ride by the president.

The three weeks old baby of Mr. and Mrs. George Hardy died today in Eaton Ohio after a cot caught fire from sparks from a stove. The tragedy occurred early in the day and authorities are investigating the mishap.
A 100 foot viaduct span collapsed after a collision of coal cars with its supports near Augusta street. The crash halted traffic, caused about 15000000 in damages, but no injuries. Wreckers cleared debris, temporary trestle work planned to restore trains tonight.
In Grand Rapids Michigan authorities report two people found dead in a city hotel room. A man identified as Patrick Pendergast from Berlin Ottawa County is named. a woman remains unidentified. Gas on full and an empty whisky bottle were found. The couple registered as J B Johnston and wife.
Mrs. John Welch and Miss Alice Welch narrowly escaped as two bullets struck their home at 208 West Center street. A 38 caliber round buried in a wall near the younger woman, and a second bullet was recovered from a wall by Marshal Grote. Sells, a local bartender, says a heavily drinking patron bragged about firing blanks and vowed vengeance.
Violent New Year assault in Dayton Kentucky leaves Fire Marshal Eugene Jolly mortally wounded and Harry Smith dead. John Watson Major Watson and Henry Schulte are central figures as mob justice fears grow in Newport jail. Witnesses recount a street brawl at Gonding and Julians leading to gunfire and knife wounds.
Erie Pa Jan 1 A theater fire at the Park Opera house interrupted a performance of In the Nick of Time with all 1500 seats full. Firemen evacuated the audience after rapid smoke fill and a balcony crash. Several women fainted but no serious injuries were reported as the crowd exited orderly and most of the building was saved.
In Union City Tennessee the defense for night riders spent the day presenting alibi and character witnesses while the state demolished this testimony. Several witnesses praised defendants but admitted they were believed to be night riders, with one contributor to the defense purse noted. No new facts emerged and both sides likely finish testimony by early next week.
John Hancox aged 80 of 4065 Railroad Avenue died at a Cincinnati hospital after admission on December 19. His wife Elizabeth Hancox aged 83 remains in the same hospital. George W. Marshall of 424 West Ninth Street Newport Kentucky, grandson, was notified.
