A railway disaster in Mexico results in fifteen fatalities and a large number of injuries among the workers and passengers. Rescue efforts are underway as officials assess the wreckage and investigate the cause.
Fifteen people killed and many injured as box cars with dynamite and grenades for the Carranza army exploded in Monterey Mexico. Twelve soldiers in adjacent coaches were killed. three children died from burns. Their mother, standing nearby, survived but seriously burned. Buildings near the blast collapsed.
A Greek steamer Thessaloniki carrying 300 passengers vanished near New York as two other liners and the coast guard Seneca searched the area. Wireless reports had said she was steering toward port, but no further word has been received, raising safety concerns.
German sources report Emperor William has summoned a major war council and a naval council in Berlin on his birthday January 27. Attendees include Crown Prince, Hindenburg, von Mackensen, Liman von Sanders, Count Zeppelin, Crown Prince Rupprecht, the Duke of Württemberg, and other top generals.

In Cleveland on December 31 Jacob Schwalm aged 50 shot and killed his 18 year old son Nicholas then died by his own hand. He objected to Nicholas marrying Katie Dauss alleging the boy was too sickly to support a family. Mrs Schwalm discovered the bodies in the kitchen.
In Blakely Georgia western Early County reports say two more Black men were killed and four Black lodge buildings burned in renewed whites versus Black clashes. Mob actions spread near the Alabama line as posses pursue alleged killers of a white overseer.
Toledo Ohio December 31 Mayor Keller decided to quit his bid for re election as his term ends at midnight. He announced after meetings with political friends that he would step aside. Keller had succeeded Brand Whitlock who is now Minister to Belgium.
The funeral of Governor W. H. Hammond of Minnesota will be conducted at the State Capitol in St. Paul next Monday morning. Hammond died suddenly yesterday in Clinton, Louisiana.
Special Cable reports the British armored cruiser Natal sunk in harbor from an internal explosion. Captain Eric P. Black commands a 13,550 ton vessel armed with six 9.2 inch guns and four 8.5 inch guns. Four hundred survivors claimed. cause given as internal explosion with foul play suspected amid recent Sheerness disasters.
Columbus marks 1916 with a shift to home rule under a new charter. Mayor George J. Karb begins his fifth term as mayor as a seven member at large council replaces the old 19 member body. A Municipal Court replaces Justice and Police Courts and officials may be recalled under the charter.
Governor Willis granted a new year pardon to Herman Thacker, a Jackson County miner who stole groceries for his wife and five children during a coal-field strike. Convicted January 1915, Thacker had not sought clemency. the decision cited his crime’s nature and his good prison record.
President Wilson and Mrs. Wilson will host their first official New Year’s reception in Hot Springs Virginia public lounge of the hotel where they are staying their honeymoon. Spectators from miles around plan to attend and shake hands with the Chief Executive.
