A three cornered duel in Lula Miss left EB Kennedy and Richard Harman dead and T Gray fatally wounded. Harman and Kennedy were each shot twice and died within minutes while Grady Gray was struck in the lung and not expected to survive. No witnesses to the shooting location are known.
Washington December 31 The Secretary of State disapproved the July concession by the Hawaiian Government to the Pacific Cable Company granting exclusive rights to lay a cable to Hawaii. The action aims to avoid hostility to the firm and to leave Congress free to decide the whole subject.
Boston December 31 Torrey B Wardner editor of the Boston Traveler was ordered freed after purge of contempt of court. He had been jailed a week ago by Judge Sherman for thirty days but was released following his compliance with the order.
