Paul Krueger, a florist at Graceland Cemetery, died at his Chicago home ten months after a hospital operation removed his stomach and part of the duodenum. Despite initial recovery and able to eat liquid and mashed foods, his condition deteriorated and he could not be saved.
A Glasgow hotel kept a coffin with a New York girl’s body hidden in a private room for two months. Her sister had embalmed the body for burial in New York but failed to sail in January. She bought a lead coffin and concealed the corpse while attempting to sell her business. hotel staff alerted authorities, and the coffin was moved to the morgue.
Dr. Theodore Herzl, president of the Basel Zionist Congress, is in Constantinople negotiating with the Sultan for Jewish immigration and settlement in Palestine. He seeks a charter of home rule and opening of crown lands. A representative of the Baron Hirsch funded Jewish Colonization Association accompanies him, signaling renewed focus on Palestine.
Akron Ohio February 19 James Wachner a seventeen year old Buchtel College student is home recovering after a hazing incident in which a rope broke while he was lowered into the coal hole basement of the power house. He suffered a severe facial bruise and a deep eye cut with others possibly seriously injured. Probes by county and city prosecutors focus on the incident and the college's accounts differ from the family’s account of his condition and transport.
Mrs. Julia M. Cooney of 133 California Avenue won a 4928.50 judgment against Governor Nash of Ohio in Chicago court. She sued on a 3000 note issued in 1892 by the American Installment Company then led by Nash. The defense argued payment to her husband, P H Cooney, with her knowledge and consent. The prosecution contends a married woman could contract, and payment should have gone to Mrs Cooney if due.
In Hayman Ky Bruce Sloan a 21 year old student at Hayman College shot and killed James Combs 24 after Combs abused Sloan and his mother. Sloan was arrested and jailed for an examining trial set for tomorrow.
John Toliver, a negro porter at the Miller House in Springfield, was caught in the act of making counterfeit silver coin using copper and ground glass. He admits melting metal in a steel ladle and planned to profit four to five hundred dollars before joining a circus. Toliver was turned over to U S authorities. five counterfeit dollars and spurious nickels were found on him.
George Spickard, a molder from Wellston, Ohio, becomes heir to 21000 left by his blind grandfather Edward Spickard of Blue Ridge Springs Virginia. The grandfather learned of an English estate but kept it secret. after his death the entire sum goes to his grandson for kindness.
Reports of Miss Stone’s release are unfounded though liberation is momentarily expected. A Seres dispatch notes W. W. Peet, M. Gargiulo, and Dr. House remain anxious as delay continues. Turkish authorities deny responsibility for the brigand transaction.
The President’s Findings: the Schley case is mainly about command and credit. The court of inquiry did substantial justice and condemned the retrograde movement and disobedience to orders. Credit should be shared among captains, with Wainwright praised for daring action and Clark deserving advancement equal to Wainwright.
President Roosevelt’s written opinion on the Schley case was read to senators and party leaders, who largely approved the document. The opinion questions Admiral Schley’s alleged misconduct but finds the court generally just, noting failures in enforcing the night blockade and Schley’s retrograde movement.
